Check the batteries in the remote also try putting the remote in another room. I have seen the remote cause this problem in zenith tvs as well.

Like I told the last poster with this problem. The DM module and possibly the power supply and formatter..ALL have bad capacitors that need to be replaced. Sometimes, (most of the time), about a dozen caps on these 3 boards fixes the set.

Hi,
If it is Sony KDF-42WE655 model then it sounds TV needs lamp.
Have you replaced its lamp since 2006?
And please check when TV gets off itself, does its standby red light blinks? if yes, how many times it blinks? This is an error code.
Let me know to find out any possible solution.
Thanks.

TV turns on but turns itself off after short amounts of time

This set is equipped with LED diagnostics. Once it shuts down on the front of the set hold down the MENU and INPUT, (sometimes labeled DEVICE) buttons until the LED starts blinking a 2 blink sequence. For example one blink pause two blinks long pause and then repeats is the code for no problem. All of the fault codes begin with two blinks and then one through 4 blinks. I suspect that yours will be a 2 - 4 code because of loss of vertical sweep. Which is bad solder connections on the deflection yokes. A common problem with these units.

Menus pops up

The menu button on the TV itself is bad and must be replaced ( or removed ). Alternatively the whole front button assembly can be disconnected. Just follow the wire back to the main chassis and unplug it.

Tv don't stay on

Try resoldering the flyback and the other components near the flyback. Common problem with that chassis. It will eventually kill the flyback if left unsoldered.
