Go to start and my computer and manually open it, break it down to a half screen and drag things to it you would like to store. Rob

Device is not recognized

Probably not the right answer for your problem. Mine is an external 1 TB Simple Drive. Mine wouldn't respond at all. I unplugged the power cable from the back of the hard drive and replugged it in and instantly it worked. I had tried rebooting the computer, plugging/unplugging over and over into the computer and that didn't work.

1TB Western Digital External keeping system from booting up

You need to go into the BIOS of your computer and change the boot order of your computer.  Your computer must be set to boot from your main hard drive only.

Maxtor external hardrive will not boot up onto my mac

Hi,
Try a more reliable brand. Maxtor isn't. You don't want to take chances with your files!
Here are two options:

1 www.carbonite.com this company will back your computer up automatically for 50.00 a year unlimited.

2 here is a much more reliable external drive at the link below.

disconnected from the computer and reconnect.
if it still doesn't recognized the device, disconnect and shut-off the power and wait 1 or 2 min. than re connect again.
with all that, if the machine still can't recognized the drive, then the drive need to be check with another work machine, make uure it is in working condition.
