Not sure about upgrading power supply

Compaq SR5410F Desktop came with a 250W power supply. I bought a 650W supply. Old supply has 20 pin motherbaord connector. New supply has 20+4 pin motherboard connector. Motherboard has 24 pins (1-20 were used with old power sonnector. HP recommends I dont use the extra 4 (They won't tell me what will happen if I do). Can I use these extra 4 pins?

I am using it as a 20 pin connector now. Just like the old supply. What I need to know is if I use the extra 4 pin connector will that supply more power to my motherboard? Hp won't answer me (Prob just covering ****) and I can't find any specs on my motherboard that answers that question.

First, let me say for the record that I would recommend listening to HP even though it sounds like their just covering their buts. If you choose not to listen to HP, here's a couple of good links to information on the additional 4 pins. It looks like the extra pins are for extra power requirements like dual SLI graphics boards for example.

In many cases the additional 4 pin section slides up and off of the main power plug for use in your particular unit.

The +4 pin has no use with your machine so it would neither benefit you or hurt you, it just kinda lays there...

Presuming you mean the Earthwatts 500:
Should work, though the Earthwatts has the 24 pin ATX instead of the 20-pin.

You just need to snap the 24-pin connector apart to make it work as a 20-pin. It can be snapped back together for future motherboards.
The Bestec is just a standard ATX power supply

Chances are that 250w power supply is not going to power a motherboard with a 24 pin connector, but you can try.
You will need to purchase a 20 to 24 pin adapter cable.

Power supply upgrade

that is a standard ATX power supply, so 95% of the aftermarket power supplies will work. Id suggest going to newegg.com and ordering one, very cheap there.

I bought a 500 watt power supply

depends on the connector , most newer power supplies have a detachable 4-pin stuck to the side of the 20-pin making it 24. use the whole 24-pin plug if it fits , if you only have a 20 pin connector on the motherbaord, detache the 4-pin from the 24-pin making it 20.
Regards.

Not sure about updated power supply

Gee. If HP recomends you not to hook up the extra four pins it must be because the four either go nowhere, which may cause a short or ground condition.Or that the extra pins will power something that will then  be in excess andd cause it too burn out. They know what will happen and for that rwason caution you not to do it. Of course it is you machine and  if you have extra money to replace things with go ahead and do it if you really want to know that badly.

EMachines not powering up

You may have updated windows to a point that this old machine cant handle the revamp. Kick back to an older ops system, although that poses security risks. Your motherboard may also have given up. Best advice - upgrade, and retire this machine to the recycle bin.
