Usually when I can't connect to other people's routers it has to do with which service pack I'm running.

What version of windows are you using?

What kind of router is it?

Does the wireless require a password?

Probably she has a secured network and you need to provide a key so you can connect. What error messages do you get when you try to connect?

It sounds as though your friend has an encrypted network. If your friend knows the key, you can go into your network center/network properties and connect to that networtk. Look at the connection properties that he/she has on their computer and type the same info into yours and you should be able to connect.

Wireless internet connectection problem

Sometimes the wireless receiver can only connect with the signal in a location where the signal is strongest, in your own house, for example. If you carry the pc outside or elsewhere, it might not be able to connect because other wireless networks will not allow you to pirate their connection. Usually these require a password to logon. There is nothing really wrong with your pc. If you don't like this, you could try searching for an updated driver for your wireless card.

Connecting the laptop to your network using a network cable, does this solve your Internet problems?
Does this works without the Internet connection dropping out?
If the wireless connection has a low signal, try positioning the wireless router or the laptop to get a better signal strength.
Also try reinstalling your wireless driver.

Make my Compaq Presario Laptop Wi-Fi.

If the wireless card is about the size of a thick credit card then it is a PCMCIA card device. This card plugs into the PCMCIA slot on either the LH side or the RH side of the laptop. You need to install the wireless card driver on the laptop and configure it to communicate with your wireless router which is connected to your Internet Service Provider. This wireless card can also connect to the Internet on free WiFi sites. As you are a novice, you will need a computer savy friend to help you or your friendly computer shop.

Wireless connection

First I will confirm what you've posted.

Before going to your friends house you used to connect the laptop up via the network cable. Since youve tried your laptop on your friends wireless it no longer allows you to surf the web via the wireless nore the wired connection?

To me it sounds like a possible mis-configuration between your laptop and your linksys router. Depending on what operating system you are using you need to get into your network connection settings (usually in control panel) and either set the TCP/IP to automatically obtain ip address or set it correctly.

If you have never had to configure this in the past ensure that obtain automatically is set.

Have you tried this: go to bottom task bar and right click on the PC icon. Select "View Available Wireless Networks". Find and select the wireless system you have, i.e., linksys, etc., and click on "connect".

If that doesn't work, use the same method to open the connection options, and click on "repair".

Lastly, if neither of the above works, try rebooting your linksys or whatever wireless system you have, and start over.

Are you trying to access your laptop (which you leave at home) from another computer away from home?
  • If so, head over to www.logmein.com and sign up for a free account. It's a wonderfully easy way to get remote control of your machine from another location without worrying about the networking.
Are you trying to use your laptop on the road and still have Internet?
  • If so, you will need some method for your laptop to connect to the Internet. If your laptop has a wireless WiFi card you can go to some location that has wireless internet. Many locations (such as hotels, cafes, and coffee houses) have free or paid wireless Internet service.
  • You can also get a Wireless Aircard as your friend said. These are a fee-based service from cell companies such as Verizon or Sprint that give you a card that plugs into your laptop and uses the wireless cell network to give you Internet access.

Trouble with wireless card

Something has gone wrong with your internet home connection--obviously nothing is the matter with your wireless connectivity hardware. You should reconfigure your home wireless connection. Follow the directions in Vista or XP help to set up a new home wireless connection. There are various ways to do this, such as through a router. If you have a home wireless router, be sure to set it for WEP incryption, or your neighbors will be able to get on your internet free.
