IT is really easy.
Open the side of the computer and on the motherboard you will see a flat silver disc about the size of a quarter.. a little smaller. Take it out and take it with you to radio shack/Wal-Mart or where ever, to get the right replacement. IT just slides back into place.

HP Desk Top Pavillion a815n - what type of mother board battery does it use?

The motherboard battery is the CMOS battery that has a part number of CR2032 and can be acquired at your local Walmart or Target type store. You will need to remove the side panel of the computer to get to the motherboard and just look for a round battery should be silver looking. Remove it and replace it with the one you purchased if it needs replacement that is.

Try using a different monitor or use that monitor on a different computer to see if the monitor is bad. It shouldn't have anything to do with your CMOS battery. I'd check to make sure the monitor itself is good before I go tearing my computer apart. Let me know how it goes and maybe we can get it figured out.

Clock in computer will not maintain time and date

Yes it very probably is the CMOS battery, time is kept counting electric pulses, when the computer is turned on there is power and memory to do this, but when it is turned off it relays on the battery to keep this an some other settings, maybe you're receiving a warning at boot time. Check this guide for replacing such batteries:

You need to replace the CMOS battery--a flat battery about the size of a quarter.
When you open the case, you will see it attached to the motherboard. Use caution when removing it from the holder--one side usually has a little tab that you can push to one side to release the battery.
You need a #2032 battery.

I left it on last night. This morning it was off

check your power cord to insure that you are getting power. make sure power cord is plug in the back.
look in back of computer. you will see a little orange switch. it says 115/220 click to 220. boot computer.
if computer boots up turn off and click back over to 115.
if it does not boot your power supply in your computer needs replacement.

Does it hurt to unplug my desktop every night?

It uses a tiny amount of electricity from the CMOS battery but really no problem at all. I turned them off for years w/o any problems.

Clock resets to Jan 1, 2008 everytime you shut the computer down

Your CMOS battery needs to be replaced. It's a round and flat silver battery found on the motherboard, it's 3V.
