I had that problem with my Acer laptop. Its the LCD light behind the screen, its burnt out or just broken. Cost $90-120 to fix depending on the brand you have.

Laptop turns on and the monitor only turns on for a second.

Hello,

you need to open the laptop and check the screen, it is possible that the flex or screen inverter that connects the screen to the laptop motherboard has shifted or has loosed contact or is not firm to its right position.

All you need to do is to open the laptop, if the flex is removed, fix it back to its right position and that's all.

Also, do a general troubleshooting on the screen and the problem should be solved.

Good luck.

Totally inoperative,ie:blank monitor

You don't say if this is a laptop or a desktop. I am going to assume it is a laptop and tell you that one of the Function Keys (F7 or so) will turn off your laptop's monitor, such that you can use an external monitor, for giving demonstrations, using Visio or another type of application that requires a larger screen than your laptop's screen.
So, it is a triple toggle type switch, such that hitting it once, turns off the internal screen. Hitting it twice turns it off while the external screen is working, and hitting it a third time, allows the internal screen to work while the external screen works, too. That way, you can see your external application working, while you're able to focus on the application on your laptop itself.
See if this is the case, that you have it toggled to turn off the laptop internal screen.

My HP Pavillion laptop turns on but the screen doesn't show.

You could be expierencing a problem with your monitor screen. try this.... connect another monitor screen to the VGA port of your laptop. Now try booting up. Look for and push Fn + the key that turns on a secondary display. if the monitor screen comes on. you need
another laptop monitor. At least you can use your laptop with the second monitor for now.

My screen wont turn on

Hiya, have you tried plugging in an external monitor to the Blue VGA port of the laptop ?

If so, do you get any display then ?

Hint : you need to plug in the external display 1st, then turn on the laptop. If the External monitor doesn't come on, then you may need to press the Function key on the laptop & the F4 key (Or whichever shows a monitor logo) to get the laptop to switch to external monitor.

If you CAN get display on the external monitor then the problem could either be that the Invertor for your laptop screen has blown, or, the backlight for your Laptop Screen has broken, or the Laptop screen itself has gone faulty. In rare cases, the cable from the Laptop Motherboard to the screen may be faulty or have come away form the connector on either end.

Hope this helps.
