Its very common..you only need a new tcm (transmission control module) thats it. also try unplugging your battery wait 15 seconds then plug it back up and that should restart your current one...but thats would only be a temperary fix.

I am not trying to step on anybody's toes here nor am I an expert in this area but i am pretty sure if you have a 1989 honda accord that lost 5th gear you do NOT need a TCM. I am 100% positive Honda did not make a 5 speed automatic transmission in those days. It could be the bushing on the shifter and if not then it is internal and 5th gear is toast for good unless you replace the gear set.

94 Accord Ex 2.2l Vtec will not engage passing gear

Sounds like it could be a problem something to do with the clutch perhaps? If the clutch or other components of the tranny are malfunctioning then it could very well be the source of quite a few elusive problems, and unfortunately the transmission on Honda's are known for hard-shifting, so i would have the transmission diagnosed just to see if everything checks out A-OK. Let me know how it goes!

Shop one of your pick and pull yards for a tranny. You will diffenatly have to pull it out to fix the gear, unless it is just in the shifter which won't press the shifter fork in the transmission far enough press the 5th gear into mesh(or into gear).
Sounds more like it might be in the gear shifter. Linkage worn or stretched, or a bushing out of the linkage. Take the plastic console off and look at the action of the shifter if it has alot of freeplay when trying to put it into 5th gear I would say, Get a junk yard shifter.
If you go into transmission It has to be pulled out of car to dissassemble it and it really is a job for a transmission specialist. Get a Junk yard tranny and just replace it. They usually give a gaurantee of some sort with the tranny.

Cannot engage transmission from first to second gear

Usually this is a linkage problem, and most often the rubber lined coupling between two rods in the linkage system. This fails as the rubber ages, and when it does you are unable to select some or all gears, and might be stuck in one gear!

Not too difficult to re and re, and part is available from Saab dealer at reasonable cost.

Coupling may be located inside the car, under the console, ahead of the gear lever housing, or on the other side of the firewall

No, you'll either have to replace the transmission or get it to a trans. shop to have it fixed.
