There's one faster CPU in that line (3600+), but it has a smaller
cache - meaning it wouldn't be much if anything of an upgrade. Maybe upgrade the memory, that would have a better return, if it will take anymore.
Put the funds toward a newer system. Hope that helps you to save some cash.
The Turion is more of a mobile processor meant for laptops since it uses less power while the athlon is for desktops and uses a bit more power. The Turion might edge out the Athlon on performance but will beat the pants off it in power consumption. The sempron is a low-cost processor meant for entry level desktops. So, to answer your question it goes Turion, Athlon, Sempron.

Motherboards are model specific because of processor and other differences. There is a model number tag on the motherboard and that is what has to ordered. The service manual link is below that will help in the dis assembly.
Did you check the AMD site for compatibility? If they are, you could have a bad chip, it could have been mishandled or inserted incorrectly. Visual inspection first for burns, contaminated or bent conductors. Static discharge will kill cpus.
