Well, that really depends on the radio its connected to. A uniden pro 510XL sounds like shit without a power mic on it, there is no audio at all. Add an amplified mic to the rig and the audio will improve drastically, to the point where people might actually be able to hear you!
If you adjust the microphone properly, you dont have that problem! I find people only pick up background noise when their mic is cranked way too high!
On SSB, you have the right idea but AM is an entirely different animal. For instance, the stock mic that comes with the HR2510 is actually very good on SSB. On AM the microphone is HORRIBLE. Generally this follows suit with most AM/SSB CB rigs also.

A 510XL? Who uses these things? Oh well, same thing applies. If the radio had properly adjusted AMC (with this radio you would probably have to replace a resistor with the proper value) the audio will be as good or better than trying to push more audio through the modulation circuit.
Yeah right. Sorry, but you're wrong. Think about it- In order to have more audio it would also amplify the backround noise also. That is true even if the mic is a so-called noise cancelling type!
Really? I thought that one was derived from the other.
I'm glad you let me know this! All of the people I talk to must be lying when they tell me that my radio sounds great on AM.
Mike I think you're one of those guys who like to hear that over-modulated "loud" sound that a clipped mod limiter makes on AM. I obviously do not. I dislike the distortion of the signal that makes it difficult to copy at any distance where I'm not getting a solid S-9 on the transmitter, and I hate the bleedover that a clipped radio causes. Even if you have no neighbors, your radio neighbors would appreciate my radio over yours any day of the week! While my signal may still cause desense and crossmod, it never over-modulates. I live the Golden Rule even with my radio and I wish more CBers would.

Dave asked: the best one on the market? Thanks, Dave My question to you, Dave, is why do you want a power mic for a mobile rig? All that power mics do is amplify your voice-period. If you have a decent radio to begin with you do not need to amplify your voice. In fact, amplifing your voice just leads to increased backround noise and a lower signal to noise ratio. While it is true that some amplified mics have better quality elements than a standard dynamic microphone, the increased noise from your surroundings( i.e. traffic) usually negate any benefit a better quality mic can deliver. I use a stock mic on my radio with a speech processor in the radio for increased average modulation. I can turn it on or off, and noone has a problem understanding me at all. In fact, many people assume that I am a base radio because of the clean, loud signal I transmit. Well, that's my 2 cents anyway --JeffHR2510--

Depends on the radio, but I would wholeheartedly reccomend the Astatic 575M6, or the Sadelta MB-4(hard to find). Stay away from the D104M6B, unless you use AM/FM,. and have a deep voice. The silver eagle, night eagle, and all of the other ceramic mics from Astatic, they just plain BLOW on SSB. On a lot of radios, for a lot of people, they sound very tinny.
Duke was saying the D104 M6B was not a very good mic. I've had two of those great mics for 20+ years and they both work like new and I have used them extensively on my base and several mobile applications. They have out lasted a $200 Silver Eagle for years

It will depend a lot on your voice characteristics, and type of radio that will determine the "best" microphone for you to buy. Anything without an echo is a plus, so either the Astatic D104M6, Astatic 575 (think that model # is correct), or (if you can find a used one) Turner Plus 3M should do the trick.

Hi, I have an MK5 Magic Mike and when I plug it into the T.V, the screen is just green and it is making a repeating noise like something is sticking. There is nothing showing on the mike itself as if it isn't plugged in. Previous to this the songs were freezing in the middle of it. Can you help please. Cheers Shirley

Hello, I have an MXL 9000 tube microphone w/ power supply. When I turn the mic on, it sounds normal, but the more/louder I speak into it, the quieter it gets, and loud noise/fizzing occurs. After a minute or two it returns to normal, but with the same problem occurring when I speak into it. I change out the tube twice with the same result.
