Question about Coleman Powermate Premium Plus 6250W Portable Generator

1 Answer

I have a Honda generator model Eg1500c. It seems ok....120v 60Hz..but occasionally the motor acts as if it is under a very heavy load and the voltage goes up to 200+ volts. The brushes look good and the capacitor is good.

Hi there,
It sounds like there may be an intermittent short in the output or the stator windings. You'll need to carefully check for bad insulation between the winding and ground, I'd use a megger for this.

regards,
Carl

Output voltage adjustment

Output voltage is based on 3600 rpm @ 60Hz. Sounds like your generator is over speeding slightly. Put a Frequency meter on the output of the generator and tune it to 61.5 Hz, that will get your generator in the 3600 RPM range.

Is it possible to lower the output voltage? My unit is running closer to 127vac?

Hi,
The voltage runs that high when there is no load so that as you load it the voltage will not dip too low...usually the higher voltage will give less trouble then low voltage will.. you also will use less amps. to run anything at a higher voltage... this places less stress on the generator...

I would not mess with it...when it is fully loaded you will be down under 120v

When you put a load on generator it powers up and down and tries to cut off.

sounds like you are trying to put too much of a load on your generator. I have a 3500w generator and when I hooked it up to my 120v (not sure how many HP) well pump when the pump would try to cut on the generator would bog down and even die. took off the load and started right up. will run other things just not heavy loads. maybe you need a bigger generator for what you are trying to power.

I have a coleman 5000 that won't hold voltage at 110 volts under load. It fluctuates up and down. The motor is running steady. What could be the cause of this?

govenor problem maybe does the engine sound slower when a load is on.
you will need something to read the power frequency

3000 rpm produces 50hz uk
3600 rpm produces 60hz

so if you have a meter to measure frequency you will also know what speed the engine is running at

Generator was running and quit delivering voltage while running. Turned it off and then restarted and checked voltage with no load. no voltage...no smell...plenty of oil...seems like a breaker8000 exl...#...

It very well may have been a breaker that opened up permanently.

But, I bet that the generator was under heavy load for prolonged time, and one / both of the diodes in voltage regulator have opened up. You will have to disassemble the end housing of the alternator to get to these, and then test with multimeter to know for sure.

Of course, your generator may have an electronic controller, and not use diodes / capacitor at all. Since don't have model #, can't be sure.

If engine has dropped much under 1800 (4 pole alternator) or 3600 (2 pole alternator) RPMs, then alternator output would tank or be nonexistent.

Honda generator runs great, voltage output is good but when load is applied motor cuts off. no breakers tripped or resets tripped?

check your load..the generator is carrying heavy weight when you are going to load a high wattage thats why its RPM will turn slowly and have the possiblity to stop it...It MUST be needed the the given wattage of the generator is greater than the load you apply.for example:when your generator's specification is 3500 watts, tehn the load you are going to apply is i watts to 3499 watts only..
