No idea why they fixed the problem then said it is the motherboard. There are times though when the motherboard is actually bad and it does need to be replaced even with replacing the jack. With a motherboard it has to convernt electricity and sometimes the wiring is fried or bad. But if it works then let it run, if not, I would take it some where else and have another company check to make sure that they did not melt the board causing it to be a board problem

Laptop won't power on with ac adapter or battery

Could be a combination of things.

1) Battery is low. Not enough power to turn the laptop on.
Caused by;

2) AC adapter has a plug on the end of the cable. The plug plugs into a DC Power Jack on the laptop.

The DC Power Jack is bad.

2a) The DC Power Jack has a bad connection to the motherboard, (Cracked solder joints), and/or the jack itself is bad.

2b) Center Pin is loose in the jack's mount.
The back of the Center Pin where it mounts has become loose.

2c) The plastic body of the jack, which composes the jack's case, is cracked. This allows movement of the Center Pin.

2b, and 2c cause a bad connection with the AC adapter plug.

No charge to the Battery, no power to the laptop.

http://www.laptopjacks.com/view_part/For-Gateway-MX6920-DC-Power-Jack-GW51425.html

[ If this is the case the DC Power Jack needs to be resoldered to the motherboard. The cracked solder joints need to be re-melted, (Reflowed)
Entire laptop needs to be disassembled down to the bare motherboard in your hand.
(No Processor, Ram Memory, or any adapter cards mounted to the motherboard. Nada)

OR,
The DC Power jack needs to be replaced.
This entails disassembling the entire laptop, down to just the motherboard in your hand. (Same as above)

The old DC Power Jack is de-soldered, and a new one soldered in place.

Very FEW computer repair shops have the necessary skill level.
They just want to replace the entire motherboard.
IF one is available.
More Ka-Ching for them also. ]

3) The AC adapter is bad.
Not providing power to the laptop, to charge the Battery, nor give power to the laptop without the Battery.

AC adapter cord from adapter to plug, which plugs into the laptop, (DC Power Jack), may have a break in it.

May be an intermittent contact provided by wiggling the cord.
If this is the case the wires have stretched, and broken.
Wiggling causes the wires to briefly touch, and make contact.

Where this cord meets the plug itself. A lot of times there is a break in the wires in this area.

Solution is to replace the AC adapter. There are universal AC adapters you can buy, or perhaps Gateway still has some for sale.

My laptop shut down on me and the problem is it will not turn on no more it will start up and then cut right back off my friend say it might b something wrong with the mother board

Do the following:

1. Disconnect the ac adapter.

2. Remove the battery.

3. Find the reset button and reset your laptop. It should be located on the bottom part of your computer and marked "reset". Take a tiny screwdriver, a thumbtack pin, a paper clip, or any similiar object and push on the reset pin.

4. Plug in your ac adapter (without the battery) and try it. If it works, go ahead and reinstall your battery and try it with the ac adapter on.

5. If it turns on with the ac adapter connected and the battery installed then you're good to go. If it doesn't then it's your battery.

6. If it does not turn on with your battery removed and the ac adapter connected then it's either the ac adapter or the dc jack.

7. You can test the ac adapter at your local pc shop or electronics store. You can purchase an ac adapter at one of these shops or order it online.

8. If it does not work with another ac adapter then it's more than likely your "dc jack" and that takes alot of work. The dc jack itself is relatively inexpensive ($6 to $30) depending on where you purchase it. The fun part comes in replacing it. You can do it yourself if you're good at soldering or you can get it done at your local pc shop or if you can take your laptop apart and put it back together then any local tv shop can do the soldering for you.

9. Have fun, Good luck, and let me know the outcome.

My computer does not turn on when i press the power button my computer is plugged into wall outlet and the plug icon. the power icon and the battery icon r all green but the hard disk drive light is not...

Try this. Take the battery off and connect the ac adapter and try to turn it on. If it works then it's your battery. If it doesn't than it's either the ac adapter or your dc jack. Try an ac adapter from an electronics or pc shop. If it works your in good shape. If it doesn't then it might be your dc jack. The jack itself is really inexepnsive and you can get a local tv shop to solder it for you if you can't do it. It's also cheaper if you take the computer apart yourself and put it back together after the shop does their part. Good luck!

I have Acer Extensa 5420. The charger LED is glowing, but the charging light on the laptop is not on. Switching on does not help either. Removed battery and put it back. That did not help either. Any...

Remove the battery and attempt to turn it on with just the ac adapter connected. If this works then it's you battery. If it does not work then try another ac adapter from a local pc shop or electronics store. If it works then that's all you need but, if it doesn't then more than likely it's your dc jack. Although the jack itself is not very expensive it does get costly to have it replaced. If you can take the machine apart, do some basic soldering, and put it back together, then you can order a dc jack online from ebay or meritline or anyone else that supplies them. Have fun and let me know how it went.

Notebook won't power on

Take the battery off and try to turn it on with just the power cord. If it works then it's your battery. If it doesn't then it's either your ac adapter or your dc jack. Try an ac adapter from a local pc shop or electronics shop. AC adapters run around 40 dollars or less if you order them online. DC jacks are a different story. I the jack needs to be replaced you'll have to take it to a pc shop or if you can do it yourself then order a dc jack online or purchase it online and take the computer apart replace the dc jack (you'll have to desolder the old one and solder the new one one). Good luck!

Hi in my laptop charging shows that pluged in,not charging what can i do

Is the computer working at all? If it is then it's probably your battery. You can order one on ebay. If it is not working at all then try a known good ac adapter. If it works then replace your ac adapter. You can order it on ebay also. If it still does not work, then more than likely it is your dc jack. Order it, remove and replace it or have someone do it for you. A computer repair shop will do it. If you can take the laptop apart and put it back together then all you have to do is solder the new dc jack or have a local pc or tv shop do the soldering for you. Good Luck!

I charge my laptop and it shows plugged in but not charging..and charging doesnt last long..why?? and when its charging...it will till 91% and after that it wiil just say not charging....

Take your battery off and plug in the AC adapter, turn on your computer. If it works then you need to replace your battery. If it does not, then you need to replace your ac adapter or your dc jack. It's easy enough to test another ac adapter at your local pc shop. If it is the dc jack then it will involve replacing it. If you can solder then you can purchase one locally or order it on the internet and replace it yourself. If you can't solder then you need to have someone do it for you.

Wont Turn on, Monitor Flashes a bit

oops, I did see the model on your Presario.

This sounds like it could be the motherboard or power circuitry.

If the DC jack was replaced, and the AC adapter, I would say the motheboard is bad. I have seen this on many models, not just the Hps.

If your laptop is under warranty, I would definately contact HP. If you have a local repair shop, that is probably your next best bet.

No ac power but plugged in

If you plugged in the ac adapter, and you still get no power and cannot turn it on, the first thing to check is the AC adapter. Get a voltage meter, set it to 200 DC, put the positive on the inside and the ground on the outside. Unless you have a highpower alienware laptop, it should read +/- 20 V, most likely 19.xx. If your AC adapter is good, then the DC jack, what the adapter plugs into, is bad. In this case, the laptop will have to be disassembled, the mother boared removed, the old DC jack de-soldered and taken off, and a new DC jack soldered on. You would really need to take it to a qualified techninician at a shop to di it.
