from what i can tell, the cricut expression has dials and the cricut expression 2 has a touch screen. Also, I believe the newest one is a little larger in size.
Turn on the machine, with no cartridge installed. Roll the Speed, Size and Pressure dials all the way down to the lowest possible setting on each. Grab the blade assembly with two fingers and pull the carriage gently all the way to the left. Behind where the carriage usually sits is a red button. Press and hold the button for three to five seconds and release. Go back to the three dials marked Speed, Size and Pressure, and roll each one all the way up and down three or four timesPress the Cut button, then turn off the machine. Let the machine sit for 15 to 20 minutes to clear the memoryLoad a cartridge, turn the machine back on and try it out. If you are still experiencing problems, you may have a defective machine.

Search cricut.com for support faq go to expression 2 search format and reset. Watch the video on format and reset and do as it says. Calibrate when it's finished. If this doesn't work re download ccr after deleting it from your computer.
You say you have a Cricut expression 2 but you say quote"...of how to reset the machine including the rolling of the dials up and down three times!" The problem I have in sorting your problem is that the Cricut expression 2 does not have wheels which work the speed, pressure and size. If you have an expression version 1 machine then there would be 3 wheels on it to adjust the speed pressure and size. Obviously if you have had the machine for 4 years it is out of warranty and I am not sure just what the person did to "fix" your problem. I do recollect a video on you tube with a similar problem however looking at the video he mentions that once it is fixed the blade housing should bounce up if you push it down, does your housing now do the same as the video. In the video Evan did he mentions at the end that the soldering of these wires may not take the first time so this may be a point to check as he mentions that it was travelling the machine that caused the wires to break in the first place. The youtube.com video I am speaking of is http://youtu.be/n7LJnfPdd08,by Evan Craftman. I am assuming that when you called cricut support you called the UK support line. I often speak with support in the USA being from New Zealand it is an overseas call however I have found them very good. If you are able to I would like to see a video of just what your machine is doing. If you dont want to post it here you could email me [email protected].
I do feel very sad that you don't wish to try the Explore as I find it a surpurb machine. I have had my Expression version 1 since early 2009, I have added every Cricut to my family of cricuts and own 3 expression 2's and now an explore. If you had bought a computer 4 years ago and you currently took it to a repair person to get it fixed I am sure their first response would be it would be better to get a new one. Your computer boards appear to be fine maybe you need to take the video to the person who did your fixing as most people who do this sort of work would not understand how the machine runs. I hope this helps and you can get your Cricut working again. If all else fails you may be able to buy a 2nd hand one cheep and have your repair person change the carriages completly.

I would contact cricut because you may have a defective machine. I had an expression and cut one thing then it froze. We did the reset and that did not resolve the issue. Cricut had me send my machine back and they shipped a new one. Mind you they will put a charge on your credit card only to protect themselves. You just ship yours to them the way they tell you in the one you receive. Let me know if you do not have their contact number.
You may want to try resetting your Cricut to see if that fixes the problem. To reset the Cricut machine, turn the unit off for five minutes. Roll all the dials all the way up and all the way down five times each. Turn the Cricut back on. This is the manufacturer's reset process. Good luck!
