This is a weird question, one that might require photos to understand. I've posted 8 photos on Google's PicasWeb that can be viewed at this URL: https://picasaweb.google.com/jasonisme/Kenmore Our old dryer crapped out and a neighbor passed along this Kenmore dryer to me. Can't find model info on it, appears fairly newish, maybe in the 5-10 year-old range? I opened the top and I discovered this burnt/singed piece of fabric or foam. Looks like it's supposed to be there, stapled in place presumably when it was manufactured. The side that faces forward is quite singed/burnt. I can't find any information as to what this fabric/foam is for, let alone if it's supposed to be burnt. Can anybody tell me what this piece of fabric/foam is for and clarify if it's supposed to be burnt like this?
Why it'd appears to be scorched I have no idea. The purpose of that fabric is to support the front of your drum and allow a non abrasive surface for the weight of drum and cloathing to slide on during use. The cloth you have in yours has been changed to silicone or other types of teflon type surfaces. John T.
SOURCE: My clothes smell burnt
If you have done any recent painting or drywall work, oftentimes the dryer will breathe these fumes and it will affect the smell of your clothes. (Just had the same problem) Maybe let the area air out and see if that corrects your problem

I am not familiar with this particular dryer but most of the Kenmore family use different thermostats for different temperature. They are usually located in the rear and are clustered on the blower housing. Take the two wires off one thermostat at a time and test. It should be closed when cold if not replace it (Usually around $15 each) You probably have a very dangerous clogged exhaust. This will cause thermostats to fail. and can cause a fire. CLEAN It out and dont use flexible plastic duct pipe. The other cause of thermostat failure is if the washer doesn't spin properly and the clothes are too wet when dried. A properly operating dryer will not take much longer than 45 minutes max to dry a load.

this is an airflow problem. make sure you are using a rigid metal duct behind the machine and not a flexible one. clean out the exhaust duct behind the dryer and in the wall all the way to the outside. any residue of lint inside these ducts will increase drying time dramatically. basically clean everywhere the air flows.

tim, check to see if your motor switch is stuck. it allows the other power leg to be sent to the heater. comes on when the motor starts turning and releases upon the stopping of the motor. other power leg comes through timer, hope this helps.

Next to the serial number there should be a manufacter date. that is when it was made. I am guessing 2 years old.
But check on the back, it is peobaly printed on a small metal tag.
Most electronics have a manufacter date posted on them for warrenty sake. yours may still have a warrenty. you can also go to Kenmore website and in the search area type in the serial number and it can tell lots of info including if it is still under warrenty. wouldn't that be a nice surprise!
