Question about Compaq SYSTEM BOARD PRESARIO 1900XL (174104001) Motherboard

2 Answers

I have a problem, in short. I took my Compaq Presario apart to disconnect the internal battery, replace the faulty 3.5'' disk drive, & too check to see if their was a possibility that through out all the parts & peices that I've managed to aquior for laptops/notebooks/etc. I was hopping and preying that I would get lucky enough to replace the battery cord, if not the battery itself. Even after taping the loose peices down so that I could turn and move the botton around to unscrew, and view what I was going to be removing to replace back together. I had some parts DROP OUT! I cannot find where they could/would possibly go; the one part bothering me most, is the FUSE; why, and ''WHERE'' could this possibly go??? I also have Older PCs too which I am ''playing'' with,it would be nice to know what parts I'm looking at, & where they go; Not too mention some sort/kind of discription! Tech Spec's, Map/ Manual...??? Please Help!

I'd like you to take a deep breath, and relax. Everything is going to be alright. You're in my world now, and this is old hat.

First of all I would like to give you a link to the Service Manual for your laptop. (It's free from HP Support. {HP bought out Compaq a long time ago)

HP Support > Compaq Presario 1900XL-1 > Manuals,

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/manualCategory?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&product=95453&#

Scroll down to -
Model XL1-XL165 - Maintenance & Service Guide Presario 1900 Series,
and Left-click on it.

[This Service Manual encompasses the Presario 1900XL series, from the XL-1 to the XL-165]

This is a PDF file. The computer you are using now has Adobe Reader on it, which uses PDF files.
(I would advise at least having Adobe Reader 8, but the new 9 version is the best. You can download for free from Adobe)

There is a way to save this file to your computer.

This way you can burn the Service Manual to a CD disk, and remove it from your computer to give your harddrive more space.
If you are not aware of how to do this, I will be glad to guide you.

You may be aware of the following, but I feel obliged to detail it.
Before taking any computer apart, (Desktop or Laptop), you should follow Anti-Static Precautions.

I use a cheap ESD wrist strap, and connect the alligator clip to the metal frame, of an empty desktop computer's case.
This is an example of an ESD wrist strap,

http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2103245

I would use a multi-compartment container, to put the various screws in.
There are Many screws, and many of them look alike, but are not.
The compartments should be labeled for where the screws came from.
You can use a clean egg carton in a pinch.

I would suggest now that you disassemble the entire laptop, except for the LCD Display.
If there is just one screw laying against a circuit trace on the motherboard, or a solder joint, it can cause a direct short.
(Short circuit = fry out)

Shot my mouth off apparently, as I'm not aware of a fuse for this model, and the Service Manual shows nothing.
I would check the Converter Board, (Page 62)

The Converter Board is where the AC adapter (Charger) plugs in.

Now, let's talk about those older PC's.

V6000 looping not starting?

One bad lead or faulty connection point can cause a computer to shutdown continue restarting on a cycle or fail to detect your hard drive boot up

test all leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions SATA

the leads from your (motherboard to your hard drive) make sure they have a secure dust free connections and are not faulty or just replace them they could be faulty

make sure all leads that are attached to your drives dvd\cd have secure connections and are not faulty

even something as small as an electrical extension or a faulty fan lead can cause you problems computer needs all of the data and power to travel through every working device and to have an end for a computer to be able work properly

a motherboard and a hard drive any leads between them will fail before your motherboard or your hard drive check all electrical extensions make sure they are securely seated even the cd/dvd drives need to have current go through make sure these devices are working

check the CPU make sure it has thermal paste and dust free secure seating

also check your computer ram modules and cmos battery make sure it has charge and they are dust free and securely seated some motherboards cmos batteries are soldered in

hope it helps

I think i shorted out my motherboard with another inverter to powerful now pc isnt coming on compaq 442875-001

Connect a known good inverter and Screen with the laptop's battery removed and power cord disconnected. The motherboard will power up without a screen or inverter connected if it's working. If not check F1 or FS1 on the main board power supply section. Also check the diodes in that area for shorts. Sometimes what happens is the screen or inverter gets plugged in while the battery or power cord is connected. Even thou the laptop is powered off it still has the standby voltage live.

HI! MY NAME IS KEVIN, MY PRESARIO F700 JUST STOP WORKING THE LIGHT OF THE POWER BUTTON JUST KEEP FLASHING. WHAT DO I HAVE TO DO.

Test your PSU or replace it if your power supply units fan is not working your PSU is faulty

One bad lead can cause a computer to continue on a cycle or to shutdown or fail to detect your hard drive

Test all leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions,IDE,SATA

the leads from your "((motherboard to your hard drive))" make sure they have a secure connection and are not faulty or just replace them they could be faulty
make sure all leads that are attached to your drives dvd\cd 3 1/2 inch floppy have secure connections and are not faulty even the electical extensions or just replace them they could be faulty a computer needs its connections to continue its cycle and have an end so any faulty leads will end up with a computer error
hope this helps

Computer will not start. I have tried a hard reset and cheked the ac adapter, which seems to be ok. I am being told it may be the motherboard. Since it was working fine one day, and then stopped...

this can be due to many reasons namely Power unit (PSU) failure, broken power switch and short circuits. see if your motherboard LED indicator light is glowing when you turn on power

Compaq presario F700. Display screen is garbled and illegable most of the time. Occasionally it will come up perfectly normal and clear but majority of time its a bunch of multi colored lines flickering....

Since the problem you describe is intermittent I would first suspect a loose or shorted electrical connection. To check this you will need to take the computer apart. Step by step photos of this procedure are at http://www.insidemylaptop.com/disassemble-compaq-presario-f700-notebook/ .
Once you have access to the lcd cable you can check its connection and the condition of the cable itself. If the connection is secure and the cable looks good you probably have a bad lcd.

Bios shows not hard disk even after putting to Auto and trying User settings

This usually means Hard Drive failure, are your connections good? Is this a new drive? If you know you have a drive with os on it then boot files could be damaged. Can you boot with os disk? You can do a repair from the windows disk in recovery mode. reset bios to default values. Last resort before saying maybe the drive controllers on motherboard are bad. Take apart and do good cleaning. This worked believe it or not on a stubborn laptop that I replaced Hard Drive and still was giving me similar errors. Client says computer has been working ever since.

During setting up computer with drivers etc. System file could have become faulty some files not registered in System
You could have System file errors these files are the heart of O/S
whereas the reg is the blood if System file are faulty things do not work properly.
Go to C:\ right click properties / Tools / error check new box popsup
tick little box to fix errors and reboot
On reboot windows will check disk for errors and fix them
If this does not help please email me at thoughts001au@yahoo.com.au
