A person posted a possible solution on your site. He said, " remove the ram and then hold the on buttton while plugging in the computer." It worked, so I shut the machine down restarted in safe mode, checked everything then did a security scan. Everything was ok. I shut the machine down, removed the front cover, removed the switch cover plate and vacuumed out all the fuzzys .....

I think the real problem was a dirty switch ..... anyhow thanks for the site and the person who sent in a possible solution.

I have a compaq computer that works great for 1 hour the shuts do

Is it shuting down? Or just instantly going off.

If it is shutting down, adjust the power settings.
  • Control Panel
  • Power Options
  • Make sure the scheme you want is selected. For a desktop it should be Home/Office or Always on.
  • Make sure that System Standby and Hibernate (if available) are set to the length you want.

Computer will not turn on

It sounds like your power switch (the buttone you push to turn on the computer) is stuck, or you have a bad power supply (that provide power to the computer). Electric components sometimes go back if they are not used often.

When I shut down my computer, I think that it is shutting down completly. All lights are off indicating that it is shut down. Then a small blue window will appear and will say "Entering Power Safe Mode"....

If you are turning off your computer by pressing the front panel power button, it is probably just putting Windows to sleep but not shutting the computer off. If your computer has Windows Vista, the default is to hibernate and not shut down even if you shut down through Vista. The "power save" message you see is coming from the monitor, which is letting you know it isn't getting a signal from the computer anymore but the power is still on. Windows will start up again from sleep mode if someone or something moves the mouse or presses a key.

The solution is to make sure the computer is actually shut down. In Vista you can do this by clicking the arrow near the power icon on the Start menu. This gives you the option of shutting down instead of hibernating. In XP, shut the computer down using the start menu shutdown option instead of the computer power button. Then the power will shut down completely.

It is possible that the power supply could be dead, I've seen this many times when people move their computers around.

Power Problems

You may have jarred a component loose inside. Open the side panel and carefully inspect the cable connections and circuit boards.
Check the memory sticks as well. Good luck!

My Gateway 500s monitor is stuck in power save mode

Try tapping the F8 key while booting the computer, you will get the start up menu, choose safe mode, when you log on, go to the display settings, that is right click on the desktop, properties, screen saver, advanced and make sure that hibernation is off, along with turn off disks or whatever , probably see turn off monitor after XX minutes, I make ours 15 minutes (150 computers and servers), I don't let the disks turn off. Choose always on also, not home/office. Try this and see if these settings help.

You have to click the Start button and choose "Shut Down " and click the mouse on that. If that does not work, try pressing Ctrl + Alt+ delete simultaneously. What they call the task manager will come up. choose Shut down and click on it. It should shut down

Make sure there is no dust covering the computer fan. If necessary use the recovery CD or a new Windows XP CD.
