Well... Unless you have a mod chip, and a hard drive installed into your ps2, that's not even in the slightest bit possible, unless you have a boombox or something sitting next to you. With the mod chip and hard drive, I guess, in theory, you could be playing a game from the hard drive, while playing an audio disk from the disk drive... but not on an unaltered machine.

All games or just the same game? If it freezes with any game can you test if it reads any CD? Insert an audio CD and try to play it. If plays, you already should know that defiitively you have some serous problem with your Xbox and if you don't know how to repair it, should take it to repair service.
Check all X Box games for scratches on the surface of each CD Disk. Keep in mind, each game CD is read by lens Laser from the inner then to the outer edge of CD Disk.
Most people believe CD's are played like a record, from the outer edge to the inner.
If there are scratches, CD may be damaged beyond simply cleaning. All cleaners and methods of cleaning are not the same.
Contact the manufacture of the CD to find out the best method of cleaning or possibly repairing so game can be played.
If you CAN play some games and NOT others, this rules out a Laser Lens Player fault condition. Look for a reason of the CD will not play in the Laser Lens Player.
Here is the top 5 reasons CD's will NOT play.

Some audio cds have a coding on them for copy right, thats if you are terying to listen to an original cd. If you have a copy cd, sometimes the dye on the cd may not be compatable with your machine. Try and do a backup with a different make of blank cd.
I'm also having this problem as well, it has to do with the OS and it is corrupted. It seems like the "Game mode" has been corrupted preventing us from playing games on the hard drive or reading games.
