This error is a warning that it issued for you to understand that the motor windings have been damaged and will need to be repaired as soon as possible.

If it really is your motor overheating, you either need it serviced, or replaced, possibly with another machine which is more suited to the type of sewing you do.

If you have a grinding noise coming from the bobbin case area I would suggest you take it out and make sure nothing is caught in there, it only takes a small piece of debri to cause problems, if the Stepping Moror Error is coming up it could be because the machine is under strain, take the bobbin case completely out and wipe round with a cloth.

If that doesn't work.. here are some more solutions:

    Bear with me here...
When the Janome 8000 is turned on, one of the
first things that it does is run the stepper motors to return the
embroidery carriage back to its original position.
    The computer in
the Janome needs to know when the embroidery carriage is back in the
correct position and to do so, it uses a sensor.
If the sensor fails, it does not know that the carriage is back in the correct position.
    When
the sensor fails, what happens is that the stepper motor keeps running
even though the embroidery carriage is fully back, so what you hear is
a horrible grinding sound. The grinding sound itself is nothing to
worry about, actually it is good news, it means that the stepper motor
    is fine.
Janome in their infinite wisdom decided that whether the
motor failed or the sensor failed, that they would simply say on the
screen that the stepper motor failed.
    I have repaired a machine
with this problem, in my case it turned out that the sensor was okay,
but someone had damaged the main circuit board, breaking the track from
    the sensor to the computer.
Unfortunately, I don't know if this sort
of repair is something that the average repairman can take care of. I
am an electronics engineer, so thats why it wasn't a problem for me.
I just thought some extra information on what is going on might give you a head start in getting some one to fix it for you.

My Janome memory craft 8000 will only sew backwards and the screen shows step motor error. the machine is 19 years old. Is this fixable?

step motor error may mean the embroidery arm is out of position gently push it back home towards the machine and see if this helps. If the mother board is gone, they will not be able to replace it as its so old, but you may be able to get an 8000 or 9000 on ebayso you can still use your discs if you don't want to get a new machine

I want to sell my 1991 New Home memory Craft 8000 sewing machine

A good place to see what machines are selling for is Ebay. That's where I sold a sewing machine and an embroidery machine.

It helps to know your product and machine embroidery lingo.

What are cassettes? Floppy disks? These make the machine borderline obsolete.

Memory cards are still around, but most EM now have USB connectivity or USB flash drives.

Satin thread? Embroidery machines use Rayon or Polyester embroidery thread.

Having had the machine recently serviced is also a plus.

Locate a Janome dealer and have him order them for you. The power cord can be purchased from Radio Shack if the dealer doesn't have one.

JANOME MEMORYCRAFT 8000 STEPPING MOTOR ERROR

if you ever have this problem, it is because you have had something in the way of the embroidery arm at the back of the machine, so it has not been able to move freely; you'll get a terrible noise as the machine is unable to do what it wants, slips gears or something and then can't bring the arm to its home position. But fear not, i have found if you turn the machine off and gently push the arm back home to touch the machine as it is the start position, when you turn it on, it will work fine and no harm done. just make sure the arm can move freely before you start embroidery!
