Question about NetGear FS605 - 5-Port 10/100 Network Switch (Recertified) (FS605NAR)

1 Answer

I bought a netgear FS605 swtich and it doesn't work on the ps3.

I only have a switch, no router. i bought a netgear FS605 switch that i connected to my modem, PC, and ps3. my PC could access the internet but my ps3 cannot. The switch has plug-and-play capabilities. my playstation 3 could not auto detect the connect. i manually put in my IP and DNS. it detects my IP succesfully but once it is checking for internet connection it fails and it says DNS error. i already put in the values in the manual setup with the numbers i get in the command prompt: ipconfig /all. I type all of the values exactly as it says on my computer but still no luck.
Please help me out with this problem i would great appreciate it.

What is the model number on your modem?

a router may not be necessary some modems have built in router functionality.

Yes you must by a router my friend.

The problem is your ISP will not give out extra Ip addresses for additional clients. The router will have a dhcp server built in and that will fix the problems at hand.

Are you able to ping between systems connected to the same Netgear FS605 switch and in same VLAN.
I suspect either switch port or Uplink cable issue.
Please try changing a new cable and if no improvement then please try with a different switch port.

Problem connecting to internet while pc and ps3 are hooked simultaneously

I think the broadband connection you are using is not enabled for NAT ( Network Address Translation).
This is required to give internet access to more than one system through a single internet connection.

If NAT is not enabled or supported by your broadband router then you cant access internet through more than one system simultaneously.

if you are going wireless have you typed in the encryption to gain access to the router. in the setup of the ps3 does is ask for passphrase or encryption........ plus it seems it would want to search for available wireless connectivity.......but you may be going hardline with ethernet straight in to the ps3 then it should be almost an automatic type connection set up should be easy.....but the thing i have experienced is that not all modems are compatible with game stations...........there maybe a list of compatible modems for your system..... give me more info on how you are trying to acquire.....so i can further assist

Router failed numerous times so i bought a netgear fs605 5 port switch to hard wire in a ps3 and my dell lap top. can only run one or the other. not both at the same time. what is wrong?

The FS605 is a switch, not a router. You can only run one device at at time because you only have one ip address. You need a router between the internet and your switch if you want to use more than one device at a time.

Laptop with broadband internet and router. how to connect PS3?

This is what you have to do:
First, disconnected the router form the PS3.
Connect the router to the incoming cable and setup from the laptop using the setup wizard.
Once you have connected to the IPS then disconnect the router, connected the PS3, then the router.
You should be able to connect to the Internet.
If you have any question related to this router, please consult your router hand book, or repost your question or e-mail me at frcs68@hotmail.com,
since this router has several feature, need to configure in order to secured the net work.

Wont connect and software cd

To connect a router or a dsl modem to a switch you either have to use port 4 or use a utp crossover cable. As you can see on the Netgear FS605 the modem/router has to be connected to port 4.

The correct way to connect these devices is:

Modem > Router > Switch > Computers

Wont Switch on

Test power in its adapter up to the plug in end of the switch adapter. The power adapters are usually the culprit. If there's power in the wall plug, that leaves you with the switch itself. It's either bad inside or should come on.

Only 1 computer getting internet with FS605

Sorry to say, you have the wrong part. Whoever told you you could hook it up to both your PCs and your cable modem didn't know what they were talking about.

Your FS605 is just a switch; hooked up directly to a cable modem, you will only see one IP address as that's all the cable modem will allocate.

What you need is a router, to allocate multiple local IP addresses and share the connection up to the cable modem.

Linksys BEFSR41 routers are ridiculously cheap these days and highly reliable, or if you like Netgear, you'll need the RP614.
