Question about Standard (CRT) Televisions

6 Answers

My 37" Mitsubishi Model CS-3725C gave up the ghost last night during a major storm. There were numerous power bumps during the storm and the TV wasn't on a surge protector. I tried the reset button without luck, and when I checked the owners manual, it said the reset button would only work with the TV on. Would a power surge put an end to the the TVs life or is it something that can be repaired?

I called a local tech from the yellow pages, who agreed with your observation. He quoted me a maximum price over the phone. He then came to my house and was able to repair the main board at a good price. Thank you.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, if the TV doesn't show any sign of power (blinking light, standby light, clicking sound), then it could be assumed that at least one of the fuse has blown. You could try resetting the breakers or temporarily plugging the TV in another/known good outlet.

Should the above be not corrective, then the TV has to be opened for a look and see. Offhand, most probable suspect would be the power supply that has been subjected to the onrush of power everytime the power bump kicks the power back in.

While the repair could be limited to the power supply, this still would require familiarity with electronic components & circuitry, use of a DVM and a soldering iron. Access to a service manual or at least a schematic diagram would be of help. Should you be uncomfortable doing a DIY (do-it-yourself), then perhaps your best bet would be to seek the services of a qualified professional.

Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

Keep the tv unplug from the main power outlet for couple of hours and then reconnect if still the same problem you will have to open the unit and get it checked with the meter to locate the exact faulty part.as replacing whole board is very costly issue.if you r familiar with using multi meters and soldering iron you can continue opening the tv and checking other wise repair person at your place is much advisable to locate the faultry component or the board.

The power surge literally will fry your complete system if not protected by a pulse box. if this set was hit without protection, its done. This will call for a total rebuild of all internal parts. the surge has unlimited energy that will fry all internal circuitry.

This repair will cost you 300-400 dollars tops. its best to just by a new one and remember to add a pulse box to the new set.

The storm did in fact ruin your TV especially if there was lightning. Always keep electronics on surge protectors. You could spend ALOT of money bringing it to a repair shop but it will cost almost as much as a new TV.

Sorry about your luck, Thank you for stopping by Fixya! a Positive rating would be appreciated.

Mitsubishi CS-40503

Just discovered last night that my set has the same problem, the TV is also about the same age. I can't find the manual but I was wondering if it might be fuse related, just don't know where that might be. I've had blown fuses before in circuits designed to protect the speakers so I thought this might be possible. I'm currently using my DVD/VCR which uses a surround sound system, to view TV with sound so I have to use VCR tuner.

I'm going to try to connect speakers to the audio out on back of the TV to see if it can drive external speakers.
