    The answer I was sent was to check the magnetron. I do not know how to check the magnetron and also to check the fan to make sure the fan is not stuck with grease. Is the fan behind the control panel?

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

To my view, your initial hurdle would be to move the microwave out of the cabinetry if it is built-in. If able to, then diagnosis would involve:

  • removing the top/side cover to expose the inside;
  • there would be 2 areas of the fan where the sound could originate; blades if 1 is broken or if they are hitting something. Either that or the bearings of the motor have lost their lubrication;
  • there would be a fuse, clearly expose inside that could cause the microwave not to heat.
Both are easy and therefore user serviceable. If the problem is not corrected, then may I suggest that perhaps your best bet is to seek the services of a qualified professional. The rationale being, further diagnosis & repairs require familiarity with high voltages, electronic circuitry and components, use of a DVM and a soldering iron.

Should you still pursue DIY (do-it-yourself), might you email MicrowaveSvc, who is also a member of this site who owns & runs a microwave parts and service here.

The fan and the turntable tray are controlled by electric motors and these most likely where the noise is coming from.

To check the magnetron, (this device generates the microwave energy that cook and heats the food) place a half a cup of water in the microwave oven, select a couple of minutes and turn it on. If the water heats up and or boils then the magnetron is OK.
If the water is still cold the the magnetron is faulty.
It isn't worth repairing even if you can buy a new magnetron, especially if it is several years old.

The fan and turntable helps the food heat/cook the food evenly.

Q - The microwave makes a loud "hum or buzz" noise but will not heat up the food?
A - 9 times out of 10 this is usually this is a bad magnetron, the other time is sometimes a bad high voltage diode. See components section.

Hi!

Please check the door switch (interlock switches) are they locking?

Also look for any obstruction like a wire or a broken piece near the fan.

Please revert for further clarifications.

Thanks

    The fan is at the back of the unit, you can see that in the following exploded view---

    The noise you are hearing is due to the fan. The fan is used to cool the magnetron during cooking, and because this fan is not working the magnetron is overheating and the thermal protector is opening, killing power to the unit. All you need to fix this is a new fan blade. The fan blade is slipping on the motor shaft ( the noise you are hearing).

    If the blade is broken then you can buy a new one from---

    GE FAN BLADE

    Please ask for further clarifications.

    A Fixya rating would be appreciated if you find it useful.

    Thanks

GE Spacemaker XL - fan stopped working, light will come on and timer will count down.

either the magnatron fried , or the fuse fried... either way the microwve has to be taken down and opened up.
If you have the serial number , GE will send you a replacement magnatron (but will not service the unit for you).
contact GE and they will take care of you... the magnatrons are warranted for like 10 years....

It sounds like the main transformer has failed. It would be cheaper to replace the whole microwave than repair this one. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Our GE Spacemaker XL 1800 microwave's controls are locked

The first thing I would suggest is a hard reset. Unplug the unit for a minute or so. Then plug it back in, set the clock and try again.

If that doesn't work, leave it unplugged for about 5 minutes.
