Unit not re-charging in car

Unit charges just fine on computer usb cable but will not charge off of my tomtom charger for car. (have checked car charger with other devices) in the beginning it did work in car and green light on car charger still comes on but unit doesn't show it is re-charging. have recently replaced device battery and still not charging in car.
what could cause this and what is the remedy?

First, I would try it in another car where you know the cigarette lighter works. If ok, then go back & check to see if your cigarette lighter works in that socket.

If yes, take a close look at the pins on your car charger cord where it plugs into the GPS. Use a flashlight and a magnifying glass if possible. Look for a bent pin, coroded pin, pin push out, etc.

Good luck.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

A couple of suspects:

  • corroded terminals on both the car charger and the car auxiliary power port;
  • regulator circuitry of the car charger itself is faulty. It maybe just barely good enough for other devices but would fail when used with the Tomtom.
Best would be to simulate a a car charging condition by attaching the car charger to an external 12~13.8 power supply. If it works, then the car auxiliary power port is fault, if not, then it is the car charger.

Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

Have you tried plugging anything else into the Cigg.lighter ? To see if that is the fault and not your GPS cord. ( try a cell phone charger, radar detector ect.) that way you can figure out if its the cord or the Cigg lighter. Then go from there.

My tomtom go 510 will not charge in car but ok at home

The Car chargers are generally the defective unit.
I have also faced a similar issue as the spring loaded cigarette lighter was pushing the charger causing it to disconnect.

My tomtom xl 335. se special edition does not take a charge. I had it on the car charger for 3 hours. Bill

hi wandskidd

use the usb cable provided with your tomtom and hook it to your computer for a few hours...that is the preferred way to charge a tomtom, then the car charger will keep a trickle charge on it.

My tom tom will not come on. i was driving when my tom tom lost power.and will not come back on.

hi rlorton69

hook it up to your computer for a few hours via the usb cable...then try it again. your tomtom car charger is only a trickle charger, its meant to keep a charge on your tomtom, and wont charge it when its dead.

if it fails to start after you charge it via the usb cable, just post back with your specific model and ill help you further

MESSAGE STATES THAT BATTERY IS LOW, AND KEEPS SHUTTING OFF. BATTERY SHOWN ON SCREEN AS DEAD.

plug it in to your computer via the usb cable for a few hours, the car and home chargers are not recommended for the initial charge as there only a trickle charge...if it still hasn't charged up using the usb cable, there is probably a problem with the usb port(charging port)

let me know how you make out after charging it via the usb cable that was supplied with the unit.

My TomTom 920 turns on in my car but when connected to the car charger the charging light does not come on and the device displays a bottle symbol and turns off

It sounds like the Car adapter is bad, try charging through the USB port on your computer to see if the unit charges. If it does you will need a new car charger - try ebay.

Good Luck

TomTom will not charge with car charger

Mine does the same, the light comes on on the charger, but not on the TomTom unit itself. There is clearly a loose connection in the cable somewhere as you can twist the flex and make it work, although this is not very reliable.

I just use a USB charger from an old phone instead.

How do I charge the TomTom XL 330S

You can either charge in the car, or you can use the docking station (USB cable you connect with to use TomTom Home) to charge from your computer

Unit charges on computer but not on car chargers

As per the Tom Tom Experts hte computer USB is meant to charge and the Car charger is only used to maintain the already existing charge. Hope this works

WILL NOT TURN ON

Hello LUCKYPURPLE,

The problem could be either with the charger, the battery inside of the GPS, or could be a more serious hardware failure.

You don't mention what method you are using to charge the GPS. Most GPS units can be charged three different ways: connection to the cigarette lighter / accessory jack in your automobile, connection to your computer via a USB cable, or from an electrical outlet using an AC adapter. To determine if the charger is at fault, try charging the unit using a different method. For example, if the GPS turns on after charging in your vehicle but not after connection to your computer, the problem likely lies with the USB cable or port.

If the unit does not turn on regardless of what method you use to charge it, then you likely either need to replace the internal battery or have the unit serviced by a knowledgeable technician.

Best regards,
Ken
