Panasonic Toughbook CF-51 shutting down

I have a Panasonic Toughbook CF-51. It fell off the couch & now it begins to boot up and within 30 seconds shuts down. I've been told it needs an inverter board, but can't find one anywhere online. Anyone familiar with this issue? Thanks for any help. Sue, FL

Hi, thanks for the response. Actually, nothing comes up on the screen. the battery light is lit. I press the power button & the indicator lights come up for perhaps 30-40 seconds, then all lights go out. Why would the issue be the inverter board? the computer doesn't seem to power up? thanks

    Hi RescueTechLA,
Actually, the power board lights are now staying on but the LCD screen is very, very dim. I can't seem to find a replacement inverter board, especially not on panasonic.com!

    Sue,

The inverter board controls the brightness of your lcd. Think of it as the power board for the light bulb inside your lcd. If your computer turns on but then all of a sudden gets dim (but you can still see something very dim on the lcd) then it's probably related to either the lcd backlight or the inverter board.

Can you give me some more details? Does it try to boot up, do you get a windows screen, what does the screen say exactly?

Sue, it's not the inverter board. People who don't really know much about laptops will often diagnose them incorrectly, especially computer repair shops. The problem you're experiencing is most likely related to your motherboard. Unfortunately the most expensive part to replace on most laptops.

Your best bet is to probably just have any important files from the laptop extracted by a repair shop and then selling the computer "As-IS" on ebay. Or you could try another local repair shop to take a look at it. I wouldn't pay any money for a diagnostics since it would take most techs about 5-10 minutes to confirm what I just typed.

Laptops Shut-Down when the unit Over-Heats.
Panasonic Toughbooks are no exception.
If the FAN is potentially Blocked with DUST or
the Fall caused the FAN to FAIL, then that would explain
the Shut-Down. Try blowing out the dust from the
back or rear-side of the Toughbook. Please also take out
the removable CD-ROM drive and the battery pack.
This will allow the dust to escape by the cavities or holes
created when there is no optical drive or battery pack.
Use a compressor instead of those cans of compressed air.
Blow also through the cavities. Use short bursts of air rather
long prolonged air blasts.
Finally, if this does not work, you should be able to purchase
a replacement CF51 (without Hard Drive or Battery Pack)
for less than $75 and then transfer all the removable parts
from the old unit to the replacement unit.
Good Luck.

How do I reset the bios Password on a Panasonic Cf-51

This method may help;
1) Locate and remove the RTC battery
2) locate and remove the main battery and unplug power supply.
3) depress the power button for 30-60 seconds.
you do not have to solder anything to the board if there are posts ic 61,63 on MAIN PCB then just put a jumper across them while you power up. if its just 2 SMD pads just use a needle probe to arc the connection.

Cf-30 disable touchscreen

On all Panasonic Toughbook Notebooks,
you must get into the BIOS by pressing
the F2 Function key when you turn on the
Toughbook as it is booting. Press F2 repeatedly.
This must be done in the 1-2 seconds before
Windows starts to load. Then you will see
Touchscreen usually on the 2nd page with the
word "Enable". Simply select enable and press
"Enter" and the choice between enable and disable
will appear. Then select "Disable" with the cursor
and then press Enter. Finally you need to
"Save and Exit" the changes in the BIOS.
That is it. Good Luck to you.

Panasonic CF 51 keeps shutting down

At what point does it shut down? Normally thats caused by heat and/or could be viruses. I would blow out all the ports with compressed air. Does it get into windows before it shuts down?
