Hi,
your mouse must have some issue with the software that loads after you login,
if you remember the date last time your mouse was working fine, the best way will be to restore your system back to that date using system restore,
but when you do a system restore all the settings or program installed after that date are lost

For system restore start your system in safe mode
1) restart your system at the compaq logo start tapping the F8 key
2) you will be sent to a menu
3) select safe mode here
4) in safe mode follow the folling instructions for system restore in windows xp

  1. Log on to Windows as Administrator if you are not admin user
  2. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore. System Restore starts.
  3. On the Welcome to System Restore page, click Restore my computer to an earlier time (if it is not already selected), and then click Next.
  4. On the Select a Restore Point page, click the most recent system restore point in the On this list, click a restore point list, and then click Next.

Note A System Restore message may appear that lists configuration changes that System Restore will make. Click OK.
  5. On the Confirm Restore Point Selection page, click Next. System Restore restores the previous Windows XP configuration, and then restarts the computer.

Get an external usb mouse, once you have it plugged in restart the computer. Then go into the device manager and uninstall your old mouse, unplug the usb mouse, then restart. That should fix your problem. Let me know if you need more details.

Office H&S 2013 purchased at Officeworks, installed on my desktop, but I need to put the icon on my screen. I find about 100 answers to Search on This PC -some updates others ? I had Excel on my

I assume you have Windows 8.1 as your OS. Unfortunately, the new OS doesn't add new programs to the Desktop, Task Bar or Start Screen. The best way to find the new programs is on the Start Screen. If you are in the Desktop, press the Windows key on the keyboard or the Start button in the lower left hand side of the screen. On the Start look between the Tiles and the Task Bar on the left side of the screen for an arrow that points downward. (You may need to move the mouse pointer.) This will bring up the All Programs list. Depending on your settings for the Start Screen, you may need to scroll past the Tiles for the non-desktop programs. Then you will see a list of Desktop programs organized by program manufacturer. All of the Microsoft Office software icons will be under the Microsoft Office header. If you right click on the Excel icon, you will be able to "pin" it to the Start menu or the Task bar. Repeat this for the other Office programs if you want them pinned. Another choice from the right click menu is to "Open File Location". This will open the File Explorer on the Desktop to the folder with the specific Office program. If you right click on the Application icon (the .exe file) and drag it to the Desktop, you will see an option to create a shortcut right there.

Once you have created the shortcuts on the Desktop or pinned them to the Start Screen, you may need to move them around. Just drag them to a more convenient location. On the Start Screen, all new Tiles are put to the very right hand side of the list. This may require scrolling several times to reach them. Holding the left mouse button will let you drag the icon.

I hope this helps.

(You can also find the Office Programs by just searching the folders - but that depends on which version of Office is installed. The default install has been the x32 version, start in the C:\Program Files (x86)\ folder. The 64-bit version will be in C:\Program Files\)

Show task bar on computer

What is the operating system? For Windows 7 and older, move the mouse down to the edge of the screen and see if the task bar slides up. If it does, right-click on it and from the scroll down list, select properties. From the pop up settings box, remove the check mark on the Auto-hide the task bar box.
Now the task bar should be ever present at the bottom of the screen.

When i log onto my user the only thing that shows up is the background picture

This can be caused by a virus, or it may just be that Windows has got a fault that's stopping the desktop appearing as it should.
(this is just a basic repair, to get you control for now. It may or may not fix the problem permanently as it can be caused by several different things)
If it's just Windows at fault, you can gain control usually by doing this:-
Press CTRL & ALT & DEL at the same time to get the TASK MANAGER box appear. Click on the APPLICATIONS tab. Click NEW TASK. Type EXPLORER.EXE (you don't need to type it in Capitals) Click OK, and a File Explorer box 'should' appear, as well as the usual task bar at the bottom of the screen. In most cases of just Windows getting stuck, this will fix it.
Restart the PC now and see if the problem has been fixed. If it has not, then it's most likely you have a common type of virus removing your desktop. You will need to do the above steps again, and run your antivirus software (i recommend Clamwin, Malwarebytes, and Threatfire for virus removing/detection).

Note that if when showing the background/desktop image, you don't get to see a mouse pointer, this is different, it indicates that your operating system has a more serious problem. If no mouse pointer is visible, try pressing your CAPS LOCK key on and off and see if the keyboard's Caps Lock indicator light goes on & off. If it does not even after a minute, then the PC has crashed completely, and you most likely will need to have somebody restore your operating system.
Good luck :)

Wireless keyboard and optical mouse

Thanks! I fixed the problem by installing a USB mouse and using fn+f9. That unlocked the mouse so I could use the pointer leaving just the keyboard problem. I then tried reconnecting the wireless keyboard (by using the button on the receiver and under the keyboard) Hey Presto!!
