Question about Polk Audio M3 Speaker

1 Answer

I have a pair of M3 speakers and one is distorted, it sounds like the cone is warped. What would it cost to replace just the speaker?

I know the problem is a bad speaker it's warped, I was wanting to find a contact to purchase a new speaker. Not the whole housing but the speaker itself.

The rubber material around the paper cone is falling apart,it's decaying. Can it be repaired or replaced?

I assume you speak of the loudspeaker or drive unit which is fitted with a thick gasket material around the edge of the cone where it is bonded to the outer flange of the speaker chassis.

The gasket material and the outer edge of the cone will be clamped when the speaker is mounted to the baffle and screwed down tightly.

The clamping force greatly reinforces the bonding of the cone to the speaker chassis.

The gasket material is important to provide an air-tight seal which is especially important when used in an infinite baffle enclosure.

With extreme care the gasket can be removed and replaced with fibreboard (the traditional material), closed cell foam or cushioned vinyl.

Water based adhesives must be used with care so wetting of the cardboard or paper cone is avoided. The finished gasket should be the same dimensions as the original so it doesn't restrict the travel of the cone and speech coil. A uniform thickness is also important so the chassis is not twisted or distorted when mounted to the baffle board.

It is possible to have a loudspeaker drive unit repaired or overhauled and it might even be possible to obtain spare parts. The process requires much experience. The cost of mass-produced drive units is so low professional repairs are uneconomic and so such a service is only suitable for special, high performance, high quality, hand-built units.

I am experiencing loud popping and crackling sound at high volume after speaker is warmed up. Speaker cones move smoothly when pushed gently by hand. Sound almost seems to be coming from inside.

Sounds like it could either be the crossover circuit or a distorted speaker cone. The cone is the easy one to check. You need to check that it moves freely at all points. It sounds like you have partly done this, but you just need to make certain you went all the way around the cone checking for free movement.
However I don't think it is the cone, because of the slow way it acts up. That could be the crossover circuit. If you have a look at it and see either an IC or transistor looking parts, then I would have thought it would be one of them acting up - presumably getting hot!
If you can have the speaker outputting sound, with access to the crossover, you could spray these parts (one at a time if there is more that one) with Servisol Freezer spray. You simply wait till the fault develop then spray the suspect part. If it returns to normal you have located the faulty part. If nothing happens, wait till the coolant wears off then try the next suspect.
Places like Maplin stock the Freezer spray.

check the tweeter and mid range. its coil may become faulty.
for checking the speakers carefully remove the speakers one by one, remove its connections.
and check the speakers with a AAA cell. is it producing cracking sound. if not the speakers coils are burned.

Hercules XPS 210 sub problem. distorted sound

I think you've just answered your own question. It sounds as if you've coned the sub woofer. Meaning you've fractured the bond between the edge of the speaker body with the speaker cone. Or overheated the voice coil and it's distorted and not getting free movement. Excuse the Pun but it "sounds" like you need a new speaker as a replacement. If it's a particularly expensive speaker it can be reconed. A check of the Net for someone close to you will find a company who recones them. If it's a cheaper one then a replacement would be in order.

Extreme distortion with Velodyne SPL 800II

Woofers are subjected to relatively high degrees of acceleration which can cause a poorly built voice coil or spider (an additional support located at the junction of voice coil and cone) to break away from the cone or the surround at the edges of the cone may have dissolved. Cigarette smoke is death to the common foam-type suround and once it is no longer intact, the cone can slap on the frame edges.
Only the very expensive band/concert-type speakers are worth repairing. Check on eBay for the right size replacement; they atart below $20 US.
High quality speakers actually come with a warranty but then, the Chinese company that built them may not outlast the warranty.

Jbl distortion! frame warped?

Nope. WE have about 50 of these with no problems. Please describe the type of distortion that you have. It may be as simple as a bad transistor in the power amp.

Busted cone (i think)

First try swapping the leads on your source, powering the left speaker with the right channel, and the right speaker with the left, if the problem follows, then the issue is with your source, and not the speaker.
If the cone is torn, then try to patch it, using some basic glue and several layers of tissue paper. White Glue, embed tissue paper in the glue, more glue, embed tissue paper in the glue, do this several times building up several layers. Guessing this is a standard paper cone...
Now if you are still having the issue, could be that the woofer is damaged. Look for a replacement.

It is called "dry-rot" and it happens with age to paper cone speakers. I am not aware of any products made to help prevent this problem. But you can always replace the woofers with new one's or find a place that "recones" speakers and that would solve your problem for a long time. If you have rubber surround on the cones, it would take much longer to have any type of dry-rot problems. The "foam" type of surround on the cones is the worst for this problem. Most new woofers have polypropelyne surround of the cones and it would probably outlast you, so replacement with a good quality woofer really is a good option.
