I have a NAD S300 integrated amp which does not have a headphone socket. Unfortunately most headphone amplifiers have seem to cost a few hundred pounds so I was wondering could I use the tape monitor output from the S300 to feed a cheap 2nd hand pre-amp (probably NAD 118) and use the headphone socket from the pre-amp. I realise that the headphone socket on the pre-amp will be pretty low quality but since I won't using headphones regularly it shouldn't be a problem.
If you want a cheap and cheerful solution (couple of quid) you could buy or make an adapter to allow your headphones to be connected to the speaker sockets.
If you want to make one, you just need to connect a couple of resistors in series with the outputs of the amp to a suitable headphone socket; I would suggest 150 Ohms, 2 Watt resistors. Has the amp got two switchable pairs of speaker sockets? If so, and one outlet is unused at present, you could leave the headphone adapter permanently wired in.
This approach would probably be lower quality than the one you mention, but it is the way headphone sockets are wired internally on many integrated amplifiers.

Gary,
This would certainly work, however much better results can be obtained using a dedicated offboard headphone amplifier such as the Creek OBH-11. Priced ??129
