Dell poweredge 1600 sc XP install

I just received a used box and trying to install windows XP.  The computer came with a serial ATA card in the bottom slot connected to a 500 GB HD.  I Cannot see the SATA hard drive when trying to install XP.  If I connect a IDE HD too the box, it sees when I start installing XP but upon restarting during the XP installation, it continuously goes back to the CD Drive and start the installation all over again.
Please help

I believe you would need to install the Serial ATA card driver before installing windows. When you first start Xp it asks if you have any ATA drivers that need to be installed first.    My guess, since it is used, that you have not the driver for that card?    Give us the make and model of that card and we can help look for the driver,or take it out all together and use an IDE hard drive.

Hard disk drive not detected during installing windows server 2003

It depends on what type of drive you are using. Plus, you may have to specify the array controller drivers if your are using the SAS (Serial Attached SCSI) drives.

Serial ata controller is flagged in device manager

The first thing to try is open Device Manager and uninstall the existing driver for serial ata (SATA) controller. Afterwards, use the Drivers and Utilities CD that you received from Dell to install the Chipset driver depending on the model of your Dell computer. Alternatively, you can go to htttp://support.dell.com and click the Drivers Home link. Enter the 7-digit alphanumeric service tag of your computer , click Continue. Select the operating system version you have, then download the main Chipset driver for your computer. Install it after the download. In addition, check for the Serial ATA category on the drivers page and download the Intel Matrix Storage Manager if available for your computer. Feel free to let us know how it goes.

yes you can do that but you need the drivers for the scsi interface. when you install windows xp (for example) i think you may have to press the f6 key on the installation to add these drivers.

Otherwise, installation wont take place.

try another windows xp disk or burn another copy of the disk you have. it's also possible that there's a problem with the optical drive that you're using.

How to install sata hard drive on dell power edge

You have to "FDisk" or "Partition" the Drive before Windows will see it.

XP - Goto: Control Panel | Administrative Tools | Computer Management | Disk Management
Vista/Win7 - Goto: Control Panel | System and Security | Administrative Tools | Computer Management | Disk Management
You will see hopefully both Drives... Highlight the New One... Create a New Partion by Right Clicking or use the Pull Downs. It will ask size etc... use the defaults.
Next Format the Drive - Select the Drive again...Right Click Format using Quick Format to save time and you should be set.

I just managed to mess up my 1600 SC with Linux Mandrake. I want to change it from raid 5 to Win 7 and turn it into a JBOD. I can't get it to recognize the dvd player so the win disc won't fire up...ideas?...

Is there a RAID card Eg PERC installed? If so, did you use the hardware raid setup? Also, Why do you want to put Windows 7 on a Server? Have you thought about Windows Server 2003 or 2008?

Open her up and check all the connections and also the BIOS settings. Does the DVD drive appear in the BIOS detection screen? I would suggest tackling the DVD issue first! Maybe that you need to change the order that it boots so that the DVD drive is first.

My Dell PowerEdge 840 will not allow me to install Windows 2000 Server software. Evidently, the 840's graphics card does not contain the drivers for Windows 2000 Server. Is there a solution?

I am not sure where you got your information but I just checked Dell's website and they have Windows 2000 drivers for your server which include the video driver.

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?os=WNT5&osl=EN&catid=-1&impid=-1&servicetag=&SystemID=PWE_P4_840&hidos=WNET&hidlang=en&TabIndex=)

If you are still having a problem then you should call Dell support. Every Dell server has lifetime free phone support.

If this helps please vote for my solution.
