Question about Gateway GT5220 PC Desktop

My computer is turning on and off continually

My computer keeps booting on and off. I thought it was the fan shutting down but that's not the problem. If I let it go it will eventually stop turning off and on but then it completely freezes and I can't even make the cursor move when I use the mouse.

Download memtest and burn the iso to a cd and boot from it to test your ram, it usually only takes a few minutes to see if your ram is bad or not, otherwise ive had computers with bad system boards (blown capacitors) that reboot themselves, and also computers that are overheating reboot themselves, check to make sure all air vents aren't blocked and that all of your case fans run well

Fan on Dell M5030 Starts on startup and then shuts down but computer continues to boot

Lots of fans are variable speed. Meaning they spin faster when the computer is hot and slow down when not. It's most likely spinning down. If the fan was bad the computer will either shutdown or generate an error during BIOS and halt the boot process.

My computer continues to shut-down for no apparent reason while booting up. It will get to bios then abruptly shutdown. Please Help!!

Maybe something is defective from the factory? Can you bring it back and exchange it for another? Is it a desktop or a laptop? If it's a desktop, maybe remove a side panel and aim a small fan at the inside. Do you know how to start up your computer in safe mode? Maybe try starting it in safe mode and see if you can do a system restore, do you know what that is and how to do it? Google will explain it to you, but I'd suggest those steps.

How to repair start-up on my computer

How long is shortly? If it runs and brings up the Windows Desktop and you are allowed to work for 10 minutes or longer then it shuts down, most likely the laptop is overheating. One way to tell if it is overheating is to immediately try to turn it back on after it shuts off. If it will not boot back up, it's overheating. If you let it sit and cool off for a while, then try to boot it back up and it does it successfully, it's overheating.Causes of Overheating:1) Dust all inside the computer. Fans clogged with dust, dust around the vents.2) Fan not working 3) The Thermal Past around the CPU has dried up or is too thin the keep the unit cool. When you plug in the power cord is there any lightswhatsoever on the laptop, where the plug goes in or on the AC Adapter of thepower cord?

When you press the power button do you hear fans running, hard drive spinning, lights on the computer, hear any beeps or lights constantly blinking, hear theDvD/CD drive click and the light on the drawer of the DvD/CD turn on for asecond or two? If so the laptop is trying to boot or may have booted, butthe screen is not showing for some reason.

Beep tones and blinking lights tells the technicians what is going on with thelaptop and why it is not booting. Most times it's a motherboard issuewhen you hear beeps or blinking lights continuous.

Computer keeps shuting down

Shuts down when? Right after you boot it up? Or does it run a while then shut down?
If it shuts down after it has run for a while then the computer is probably running hot. Either the CPU Fan is not working or the Thermal Paste has dried up or is too thin to keep the CPU Cool. To prove it is running hot, let the computer sit for a while then boot it up. Once it boots up use it until it shuts down and immediately try to boot it up. If it does not boot up that means it's running hot. But if you let it cool off then try booting up you will be successful.

My Toshiba Equium starts up ok but when I start using it it shuts down (as if power has been removed) any thoughts

If the Toshiba shuts down and then cannot boot up straight away until it has cooled down, then you could have an overheating problem.
This is caused by a faulty fan and/or dust blocking the heatsink/fan assembly.
When the CPU overheats it goes into a thermal shutdown, and if you continue to ignore this problem, then the CPU will eventually fail.
Check the fan to see if it spins freely, if not then replace the fan, if the fan and heatsink/vents are clogged with dust then loosen and remove/vacuum the dust.

protection error message means that your unit's fan is not working

it is a feature to keep your unit from overheating

check if there is anything blocking the fan of your unit from rotating

if problem still persist replace the fan

P4 chit overheating

Hi again,

For some reason I lost you in the Live Session/Chat.

In any case, my other thoughts:
  • The Intel 865 motherboard will auto shut down if fan does not rotate or in your case no fan. Added to this would be the thermal protection under the CPU.
  • The data led continuously lighting up is because of the jumpers.
Other than the above, I firmly believe, the unit will run as expected soon as the HSF (heatsink and fan) are installed.

My compliments, with the 2gb ddr from Kingston memory, i think you have a fast machine there. Just add a decent 128 or 256 (or even a 512) video card and you are set with a gaming rig.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.
