You have a defective light engine. We just went through this and we have the same TV that you have. Hitachi knows about the problem but will play dumb when you first call. If you deal directly with their Customer Relations Department 800-654-7013, it will make a lot of difference than regular customer service.
Here's how they handled our situation. We called Hitachi after lots of research online and they gave us the names of some certified dealers in our area. The tech came out and in less than 1 minute said the TV had a defective light engine. We called Hitachi back and low and behold, they are aware of the problem...imagine that. Hitachi called the dealer directly and once the dealer confirmed the problem, they agreed to send a brand new light engine out to the dealer and the tech came out and replaced it. Here's the kicker...Hitachi will pay the for the part ($1500) but they ask you to pay for the install. Our install was $400. This was worth it to us being that we spent $3600 on this set 3 years ago. Once the light engine was replaced, the TV looked BRAND NEW! Please deal with their customer relations department at the number I lised above. If you deal with customer service, they will have you chasing your tail...so to speak! Good Luck! If you're willing to cover the install, the rest should go pretty smoothly..at least it did for us:)

Your TV most likely has one of two possible problems.
Problem #1: Convergence Chip Failure ( common problem )
Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem
Here is a quick test....
Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.
Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.
You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.
If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.
Solution #1
You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.
Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy
Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Solution #2
What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc.

It sounds like to me you have a bad Optical Block. It is a expensive repair and you may want to call Sony at 1800-222-SONY and see if the would assist you in repairs. Due to the age of it, they would probably only cover a partial amount of the repair.
Hope this helps,
