Can't write onto HDD

I have the Simpltech 320GB HDD. Recently it hasn't been letting me transfer files from my computer onto the HDD. However my computer recognizes the HDD and I can even play files from the HDD on my computer. It seems like its in a read only format...? How can I fix it???
Thanks in advance!

This seems like a driver confliction. i suggest you re install the driver sets that came with this unit. it should be a disk that came with the HDD. Use this disk and reinstall all software. this should fix this issue. I would also defrag the main on board hard drive as well. Sometimes, this simple tool will fix this issue as well.

Just bought a 500g ministation buffalo one. but very slow in transferring files from computer. As I am using windows xp, should I format to NTFS or keep it as FAT32 as it comes

Keep it at Fat 32 as most USB drives come that way. and any Windows operating system will recognize the drive. The reason that it transfers files slowly is because the USB drives are slow compared to internal drives. Also your USB ports may be of the older variety USB 1, rather than USB 2, but this is a function of *********** board chipset. For instance, many USB drives are coming out with the ad on the box saying compatible with USB 3, but if your machine only has USB 1 or 2, then it can not be run at the higher speed. My passport 320GB hard drive is giving me an I/O error every time I plug it into my computer. Copying files from it is either extremely slow (for documents) or not happening at all (videos). I am currently...

1. This could be a "Power related problem".
While you transfer data from with your HDD, make sure your your netbook is connected with an external power supply (Charger/Adapter.).

If it doesnt solve your pproblem, try updating your USB Drivers/ Chipset drivers. (All the Ex-HDD have Hi-Speed USB 2.0 port, may be your MoBo doenst have the relevant drivers to support your HDD.)

If this doesnt solve your problem, try contacting the HDD Manufacturer Support or replace it after recovering your files.

Thanks.

I have an i mac and windows 7 laptop.......the laptop is brand new and i want to transfer all my music and movies from my mac......can this be done and if so how???!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

> transfer from Mac to PC ... how ?

Several ways:

* use Ethernet cables to connect the network-port on each computer to a "router" (one of those boxes that "splits" your Internet signal, and might provide "wireless" access inside your home), and then enable "file-sharing" on both computers.
Then, the computers can "talk" to each other, via the router.

* write all the files to an external storage device, e.g., USB memory-stick or Western Digital Passport device. Move the device to the other computer, and copy from the device onto the computer.

* "burn" all the files to CD-recordable or DVD-recordable disks.
Move the disks to the new computer.

I want to back up my hard drive to an external hard drive(Western my book 320G)I do not wish to purchase their auto back-up program. Can this be accomplished?

Yes it can,. Your external HDD will show up in "my Computer" as another drive. You can transfer files simply using copy and paste. (or edit -> copy files to folder) which I advise. Bear in mind that hidden, and read only files will not be copied. These files include the mailboxes in Outlook Express. So be careful. I advise making copies of all files of this kind, first.

We have just bought one, and we have run the installer. However, we do not know exactly how to transfer files onto it. Please help. Thank You.

All you have to do is open the hard drive, then open the folder you want to transfer files from and click and hold and drag the files across. Or you can do copy and paste.

My Western Digital 320GB MyBook... Problem

If all you want to do is transfer data that you have backed up on your main computer then all you need to do is plug the drive into another computer, click on 'my computer' and click on the mybook drive to explore the data on it. To transfer a certain file just copy it and paste it onto the drive of the new computer.

If you are talking about backing up data from a second PC, you will need to install the WD software on that particular PC, and use the advanced backup menu. Just remember that if you back up a second computer, you need to create a folder for that data to be stored in, otherwise it is possible that it would overwrite the data from your first PC

in otherwords to back up several PCs the root of the WD drive should have folders in it labeled - 'PC 1', 'PC 2', etc

Hope this helps
