Question about Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) Console

1 Answer

PS3 Turns on but will not load home screen with system options.

I have contacted Best Buy's help line and was informed that the latest update we all had to download is faulty. If you have turned on your PS3 and it loads the black screen with the wavey smoke behind it but will not load the icons for games...system settings... ps3 network...etc... this is the problem caused by the update download. Also, your controllers when you try to connect them without the wireless will not be able to connect to to the system. If you have this problem call this number... Sony will fix for free if your system is within its 1 yr warranty will fix it for free. 1-800-345-7669...its a pain to navigate... I just hit 0 to get to a person to talk to.... please let me know how this goes.

More than likely your hard drive was corrupted. The easiest way to fix it is to format the hard drive. There are LOTs of different ways to do this but the easiest way is to just hook the hard drive to a computer via a usb cable and then formating it through disc manager.

Here's a quick guide:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/309000

It doesn't matter what file system your choose, just format it, and then pop it back into the PS3. It will recognise the hard drive as a new drive and then will reformat it again so that the PS3 can read it.

That's it! Problem solved.

The drives are SATA so if you don't have a usb cable you could always throw the drive into a laptop as long as it takes a SATA drive and use an XP or Vista CD and follow the same generall game plan: format the drive

OR you could swap the drive into someone else's PS3, it will do the same exact thing. It will recognize it as a new drive and will format it, then just pop it back into your old PS3 and boom. SUCCESS!!!

:)

That's probably the easiest way now that I think about it.

Hi all, I can't "sign in" in PSN, it says you you

You seem to have some corrupted data on the hard drive regarding downloads and firmware. No fear this is an easy fix. First off...shut off ps3 so that its in standby. (Red Light On).
2. Hold the power button down; the system will turn on and turn off once again.
3. Press and hold the power button again and keep holding, it will beep as it turns on and then it will double beep. When you hear the double beeps immediately take your finger off the power button (if your system turns off before you get a double beep just try again and hold the button, it should double beep the 2nd time you try)
4. You will be prompted to plug in your controller via USB and then hit the PS button
You will now have a screen with these options (I have attached a picture of this screen below)
1. Restart System: Restarts the PLAYSTATION®3 System.
2. Restore Default Settings: Reset all system settings back to default.
CHOOSE THIS ONE 3.Restore File System: Checks for corrupt/missing system files.
4. Rebuild Database: Rebuilds the OS for the PLAYSTATION®3.
5. Restore PS3 System: Fresh restore; Deletes everything and starts from Scratch.
6. System Update: Update the PLAYSTATION®3 System
IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU DO NOT CHOOSE THE WRONG OPTION HERE OR YOU WILL LOSE ALL YOUR DATA. The one that fixed my blu-ray drive is option 3: RESTORE FILE SYSTEM
I REPEAT CHOOSE RESTORE FILE SYSTEM
After this, it is going to restart and bring up a screen reading something like "you have Corrupted System Data. Your PS will now replace this data" Then you choose continue and that should be it.
This option reinstalls the system files and drivers inside the PS3 with the original ones that are stored on your hard drive. In this case, it replaced a corrupted driver for the blu ray drive thus fixing my issue and hopefully yours!! This option will only replace all system files thus saving you from loosing any data that's stored on your hard drive. Again this option does nothing to your hard drive it reads a file from the drive and rewrites it to the PS3 system. Hope this helps...it did for me.

Unable to down load latest update ,to be able to get on line .....version3.41.... runs really slowly an gets to 8% an then comes up fault has occured ...tried conection test and both ip address an...

If I were you I would download the update on your PC or laptop and place the file on a USB memory stick. Create a directory on the memory stick call PS3 and then inside that directory create a new directory called UPDATE. Place the PS3UPDAT.PUP file in that new directory called UPDATE. Now go back to your PS3 and go to settings, scroll all the way up the top and select system update. The next screen asks you to either update via internet or removal storage. Select removable storage and the PS3 will then update off of your memory stick.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa

My ps3 comes up with an error when i am trying to do the new update for FIFA 10. Comes up with error 8002ae22... can someone help in normal people terms on how to fix this

If you receive an 800 series error code on the PLAYSTATION 3 system, we recommend performing the following steps which may correct the problem.
Install the Latest System Software Update

To check what version of the System Software is currently installed on your PLAYSTATION 3, from the PS3 Home Menu go to Settings > [System Settings] > [System Information]. The system will display the System Software version number. You can check online to make sure you have the latest version installed.
Restore Default Settings

From the PS3 Home Menu, go to Settings > [System Settings] > [Restore Default Settings]. Once you select Restore Default Settings, you will see a list of settings that will be restored. Scroll through them and press the X button to restore the settings. After the operation is complete, you will see the initial set-up screen that appeared the first time you turned on the PLAYSTATION 3 system. You will need to go through the initial set-up process before you can use the PLAYSTATION 3 system.

No discs are recognized by the console.

Your BD Blue ray lens is damaged. Try doing a system restore and reupdating the lastest software update. If nothing helps you need to contact Sony via Phone or email. Its most likely your Playstation console needs replacing. If youve had your playstation for over one year then you will have no warranty and will need to buy a new playstation console. You can find cheap options on eBay. :)

Are you connected to the internet with your PS3? If you are make sure you have the latest update. If not you can download the latest update onto a memory stick via your PC and just plug it in to the PS3

Playstation 3

Hey fyocksofresh,

If performing a system update with your PS3 fails, you may wish to try updating using a USB flash drive and your home computer instead. In order to do so, you'll need to create the following folders on the flash drive itself:

PS3 > Update

Once this is done, you'll want to visit the website I've provided below to download the most recent software version. The link should be easily found under the "Download the System Software" heading on the page.

http://playstation.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/playstation.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=275

Once you've downloaded the file and transferred it onto the USB flash drive, connect the flash drive to your PS3 and choose "Update via Storage Media" instead of the normal internet option.

In the event that updating the software this way doesn't work, there are a couple of things you may wish to try before attempting again.

1) Delete all the cache files and cookies from your PS3's internet browser.

2) Power cycle your PS3 (turn it off completely, then back on) before attempting again.

3) Restore the default PS3 system settings. This should clear any potential problems that may be caused by your current system software version.

If none of these help, I'd strongly suggest contacting Sony for more information. You should be able to do so by calling their toll-free hotline at 800-345-SONY (800-345-7669) or by filling out an online repair request form.

Hope this helps you out.

Sincerely,
Aaron

Updating PS3 .PUP file

Update data download procedure
  1. Create a folder on the storage media in which to save the update data.
Using a PC, create a folder named “PS3” on the storage media or USB device. Within the PS3 folder, create a folder named “UPDATE”.
    pc_update_clip_diagram_us.jpg
  2. Download the update data and save it in the UPDATE folder created in step 1.
    btn_download_up.jpg
Notice Be sure to save the update data as noted below. If the data is not saved in the correct way, the PS3™ system will not recognize the update data. The folder name must be in all uppercase letters.
  • Location: Save in the “PS3” folder > “UPDATE” folder
  • File name: Save as file name “PS3UPDAT.PUP”.
Update procedure Notices
  • Do not turn off the PS3™ system or remove the storage media or USB device during an update. If an update is cancelled before completion, the system software may become damaged, and the system may require servicing or exchange.
  • The power button on the PS3™ system front is not active during an update.
  1. Insert the storage media or USB device that contains the update data in the PS3™ system.
  2. From the home menu, select icn_settings.gif (Settings) > icn_ntwkupdate.gif (System Update), and then press the x_button.gif button.

    sysupdate.jpg
  3. Select [Update via Storage Media], and then press the x_button.gif button.

    viamedia.jpg
The system automatically searches for and finds the update data saved on the storage media or USB device.
  4. Start the update data.

    network_update.jpg
Press the x_button.gif button to start the update data. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the update.
  5. Confirm that the update was successful.
After the update has been completed, go to icn_settings.gif (Settings) > icn_ps3_systemsettings.gif (System Settings) > [System Information]. If the System Software field displays the version number of the update, the update was successful.
