Question about Kenmore 53642 / 53644 Side by Side Refrigerator
I borrowed a friends fridge and bought another one recently, I switched it off after cleaning it out but there is a strong smell now coming from inside if I open the door it catches your breath.
Can gases leak and be harmful? If so what signs should I look out for?
Refrigerant is heavier then the air we breath. By knowing this, I believe if you did have a leak it would settle to the bottom of your unit. One thing you may smell that could be caused from your unit is burnt plastic. If you smell a burnt plastic smell then some wires may be burnt. To answer your question as to the danger of breathing the gas. It is harmful to inhal refrigerant. Since it is heavier then the air we breath, it displaces oxygen. Please let me know if I can help with anything else.

Refrigerant gas can be harmful in high concentration but a regular home refrig does not have enough refrigerant to be dangerous unless directly inhaled at the leak ( it would disipate faster than it ould build up) plus refrigerant is odorless and colorless so you probably wouldnt even know if it was leaking.
Your odor is most likely from a missed food item still in the frig or something that altho cleaned up left an odor behind. the most common culprit is citrus fruits. when they go bad they will leave a gaseous smell behind.
thanks for using FixYa hope that answers your question. Peyton
