You will not believe it, but he solution if Homer D'OH! simple. Had the same thing, until I realized that what I thought was the CD hold spindle is acually a cardboard protector for the CD components. It seems to be a very flexible CD player "face" correct? It's actually removable cardboard - pull it out and the CD components are now exposed. The CD will properly mount on the spindle...has pretty good sound.
