We have customized a software program for our company that is based on sy-base SQL and powerbuilder on windows machines. We now are thinking to convert to Mac OS. -Is it possible and cheap to do (regardless the price of the mac machines)? - what do we need to install on the mac machines? - Will the programmer need to alter the original program? or will install straight on the mac system? - Who is best to helps performing that task (names and numbers of companies)?

The software is designed to calculate calories in meals for our costumers. It really does a lot of things regarding the delivery list and address of costumers, ingredients of every meal used, set menus of different types e.g vegetarians, sea food, lactating women.. etc.

It actually fairly complicated in what it does and its not easy to explain exactly what it does because it involves to many coordination and listings and calculations.

I hope this answers your Question.

Whatkind of form is the program on now? is it a executeable file that you run on your windows?

If the program requires the sql program and powerbuilder to work, then possibly it might work on the mac with those programs installed.

but you haven't really told us much about the program.

if the program is written for windows and is in windows executeable form. Then you would either need a emulator or use bootcamp on the mac to run the windows program
http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/bootcamp.html

if the program is something that is run out of those two programs then it should work just by installing the programs.

Could you ask the programmer that wrote the program? I'm sure he or she would know alot more about it than people who have no idea whatkind of program you have there.

If it was Windows based it was setup to install into the windows directories. Although I'm not as familiar in this field I'm fairly certain you will have to alter quite a bit for the software you customized to work and actually run on a Macintosh.

Sorry, I don't know of anyone who could help you make the migration or suggest using particular methods to make the transition simple.

No, it won't work out-of-the-box. Windows programs are not compatible with a Macintosh Operating System. The program or software you customized will have to be re-programmed to work properly with the Macintosh.

What is the software package ? Give details about the software details .

  • SAM ANDERSON Feb 19, 2009

First of all it requires lot of process to make your program to run on Mac os . The cost involved is more in this process of conversion . The programmer should reprogram the software to make it compatible to Mac os . It is bit difficult task to do reprogramming . It is not cost effective too. Even if it is reprogrammed you need to check the working of the software and check for any errors produced.
You need to install interface component n your machine to support SQl.
Can you provide location so that i can find someone in your area to give you the details about the cost involved in entire process.

  • SAM ANDERSON Feb 20, 2009

Sorry to say it wont work on mac by just installing the sybase and power builder software. Reprogramming is required.

Troubleshooting 101

Fix common PC problems Having trouble with your computer? You've come to the right place. Even if you don't know a computer language (or want to), you can solve several common PC problems on your own.
F1 is magic: Get help on your PCtroubleshoot.jpgIf you can’t figure out how to complete a particular task in your software program—and you’re using a PC—the most important shortcut to know is the F1 key. Just push it while the program—Word, Excel, or whichever program you’re using—is open and active, wait a moment, and the Help window specific to your active program will appear. The F1 key works with almost all Microsoft products, so it’s a helpful starting point for a wide variety of problems.
In this article, we offer many ways to do what you need to do in Windows 7 and Windows Vista. Often, there may not be a Help topic for Windows XP, but the process is often the same as in Windows 7 or Windows Vista. The only difference is usually where to find the link in Control Panel. Most often, it’s just a matter of slightly different wording in the heading or the text describing the task. Don’t worry. If you search in Control Panel, you’ll usually find the link you need.
The basicsIf you’re encountering a different kind of obstacle – your new device won’t appear on your desktop, an application you added won’t run, or your computer is refusing to start up – here are a couple of preliminary steps:
  1. Before adding any major hardware or software to your system, make sure you've recently backed up your Windows 7-based PC or your Windows Vista-based PC as a safeguard. By using the automatic backup functions, you can schedule regular upkeep for maximum convenience.
  2. Write down the contact information for Microsoft Customer Service and Support, should you need to consult an expert. Take a second to print the below instructions as well, and keep them handy as you walk through the troubleshooting process.
  3. Many issues can be resolved by simply checking to be sure that all of your plugs are connected properly. After you are sure of that, try restarting (“rebooting”) your system. Turn your computer off, and then back on a few seconds later. If the problem continues, follow the steps below.
Locating the problem Ask yourself if the problem is related to hardware, software, or the operating system (such as Windows 7, Windows XP, or Windows Vista). The following are some common indicators that can help you decide which is the right answer.
If you're uncertain, don't worry. Just start at the top by determining if your software is working, using the Software errors section that follows. If the issue persists, proceed to the Hardware trouble section and then to the System failure section.
You can also find really helpful information at Microsoft Help and Support. If you'd like to search by individual program, try the Product Solution Center. Or check the columns and blogs found on the Windows Community Web site, where you can find helpful input from experts and fellow computer users.
The lists on the right side of this page may also help you narrow down the type of trouble you are experiencing.
Software errorsIf programs refuse to install, won't appear on your desktop, can't seem to run without freezing, don't load at a decent speed or function properly, or Internet access is unavailable, here's how to troubleshoot:
General issues
  1. Confirm that your PC meets the software's minimum system requirements. If it doesn't, you'll be unable to run the program without upgrading your computer's hardware. Note that PCs which barely meet or just slightly exceed these minimums may run the software more slowly and can be less reliable. Windows 7 and Windows Vista users can reference the Windows Experience Index to quickly gauge their PC's general capabilities.
  2. Check for compatibility with Windows 7 and Windows Vista.
  3. Close open programs and windows that you're not currently using. These can eat up system memory and processing power, slowing your PC or preventing additional software from running. Try running the program again.
  4. Check available hard drive space. Roughly 5 to 10 percent of your hard drive's total storage allotment should be left free to ensure optimum system performance in Windows 7 and Windows Vista, prevent crashes, and keep Windows running at top speed.
Note Use Disk Cleanup to free more space:
    Windows 7
    Windows Vista
    Windows XP
Check for program updates and information on frequently encountered issues at the software manufacturer's Web site. For Microsoft products, you can also load Windows Update for Windows 7, Windows Update for Windows Vista, or visit the Microsoft Download Center. If you install an update, restart your computer, and attempt to run the program again.
  5. Uninstall or delete unwanted programs in Windows 7 or Windows Vista to cut down on clutter and remove any drain on your system's resources.
  6. Disable programs you don't use to in Windows 7 or Windows Vista by preventing them from automatically loading when Windows starts. If you’re running Windows 7, restart your computer, and try the program again.
  7. Defragment your hard drive in Windows 7 or Windows Vista to improve performance.
  8. Scan for viruses and spyware. Windows Defender in Windows 7 and Windows Vista can help detect and prevent threats, along with preventing annoying pop-up notices and unauthorized home network intrusions. You can scan your PC for free.
  9. Reboot your computer and try loading the program again. If it still won't load or work correctly, you may need to uninstall the software and then reinstall it from scratch and reboot again. Advanced users can also try these advanced troubleshooting tricks in Windows 7 and Windows Vista.
  10. Consult Microsoft Help and Support and the Windows Community. If live assistance is required, first contact the software manufacturer's customer support department. For additional assistance, try Microsoft Customer Service and Support.

Product key 25 microsoft

Which operating system ???
If you are trying to recover a key of an already installed program on your computer there are freeware keyfinders on the internet
http://download.cnet.com/%7Bvalue=http://www.download.com/magical-jelly-bean-keyfinder/3000-18487_4-10079600.html The Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder is a freeware utility that retrieves your Product Key (cd key) used to install windows from your registry.
It has the options to copy the key to clipboard, save it to a text file, or print it for safekeeping.
Serial keys Location
Lift up your computer and look for a tag.
The tag will probably be located on the side of the computer, or on the bottom of the unit for a laptop.
The service tag is generally a large black and white tag and it will say "Service Tag Number."
Do not confuse this tag with the Windows tag, which may be located in the same area on the computer.
or
Restore My Product Key
Product key glitches can occur as a result of operating system file changes and random errors, leaving you with constant re-registration reminders even where you have already entered a valid key for a particular product.
The quickest fix is to restore your computer using the System Restore feature, which will take your computer's settings back in time to a point before the product key problem first occurred.

Open "Start," click "All Programs," open "Accessories," and click the "System Tools" folder.
Click on "System Restore" and select the option to "Restore my computer."
Click on a restore point from before the product key error first appeared.
Press "Next" to begin the automated restore.

or
Get a New Product Key
Having the product key of a software application is essential when installing and activating the software on your computer.
Product keys may also be called CD keys, serial numbers or activation codes.
If, for some reason, you lose the product key, or it stops functioning, you must get a new product key from the creator of the software.
Most software companies work with their customers in resolving product-key issues.
For example, Microsoft advises its customers to contact Microsoft Support Services in the event that a product key becomes lost or damaged.

Go to the website for the software company.
Look for a heading such as "Contact Us," "Customer Service" or "Support."
Get the contact information for the company, such as an email address or telephone number. Some companies require that you contact them through a web-based form on the website.
Contact the company by phone or email explaining that you have lost your product key or that it is no longer working.
Include as much information as you can to help them verify that you are an authentic customer. Include copies of receipts you received (email or physical copies).
If you have original packaging from the product, include any relevant bar-code or version numbers.
Refer to the name and email address that you used to register the product.

Lost password

I assume you mane that you've lost your Windows password to login on startup? If so, depending on the windows version in use, there is Linux based software that can be used to remove all passwords from the machine, allowing it to be booted and the passwords renewed.

Try doing a Google search for a program called "Password Resetter"
You could also try the password reset program found here: http://www.password-reset.com/file_download.php

I'm trying to install a program but it is telling me it can't run, it requires run as. how do I fix this

This occurs when you are trying to install an older program on modern machines. Old DOS-based software can sometimes be run in a window, but may require much manual setup. Older Windows-based software may be restricted because the programmers, knowing the software would not run on Windows 95, let's say, had the software look for the Windows 98 identification. Unfortunately, while those programs may well run under Windows XP, since the program is only looking for Windows 98, it see this as in incompatible operating system. Therefore Microsoft gives you the ability to run these programs in a "run as" mode. You select which OS you wish the software to "see". So if your setup program won't run because of this issue, try this: Right click on the setup program icon, select the COMPATIBILITY Tab, and try using COMPATIBILITY Mode. Tinker with the setting and retry to load the program. Hopefully you have a good outcome. Of course the better solution is to get a version of the software that is updated and compatible with the current OS, but this is not always possible.

How to install chikkamessenger on my pc?

I don't think you install it. It's a Web based messenger, probably runs in your browser. You need to have your friends messenger ID's and add them in your contacts, and just write to them. Please note, most web based messengers are not that secure. A program installed on your machine like Google Talk, or Windows Live, or the installable version of Yahoo messenger are much safer.

How to rid my computer of viruses

Use any Anti-virus scanner.
To start with you can use any trialware version of prominent anti-virus companies, like
norton
mcafee
bit defender
avg

you can try download.com to find free and trial based anti-virus programs.

Updating your virus scanner definitions regularly would minimize chances of getting infected again if your virus scanner is good.

Or just search Microsoft's Knowledge base with Keywords of 'connect', 'vb.net', 'sql server', which is what I did to get above results.

Windows xp problem

Hi

It seems you installed an outdated (16bit Program) for the ScanMaker 4. 16Bit applications/programs and generally DOS based (Windows 3.x and 95) and will not run properly from Windows XP.

First, check http://support.microtek.com/product_dtl_2.phtml?prod_id=23 and download and install Drivers and Plugins for Windows XP.

You may need new 3rd Party Scanner/Image Applications that work in Windows XP. However, if you still want to use the 16Bit application then you will need to run the program in 16Bit Compatibility Mode. To do this, right-click the program executable or shortcut, choose propertise from the drop-down menu, go to the Compatibility Tab and put a tick in "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" From the drop down menu, choose Windows 95 or 98 and apply.

Finally, check the the User's Guide or ReadMe file(s) (if you have it) for more info. Especially, check the recommended OS for the Applications.

I might be wrong, but i think ScanMaker 4 has a SCSI interface. If this is correct, then your laptop or port replica must have a SCSI port. NB: SCSI is not the same as Printer LPT Port.

Regards
Mike

The type of pc is not as important as the type of webcam at this point. The story also needs more details.

If you had a Logtec webcam and at first it only worked with its custom made software, what did you do to make it work with MSN?
----------------
Based of the info provided, I would
1. uninstall all cam software while the cam is unpluged,

2. Reboot the pc. Then plug the cam in.

3. When windows detects the cam, it will ask for drivers, do not click on search on windows update website, click the option to choose from a specific location and then browse to the cd provided.

4. Try and load msn now. The msn website or the cam company sometimes have a patch to make the cam and the messenger work together. I would check the cam website before looking around the microsoft site.
