IBM -3509707 External 4x CD-ROM Drive

Weird CD-ROM mount problem, please help

By Joey2 - usenet poster

I've got a 7300/200.
It's been completely impossible to make the CD-ROM-drive mount any
CD-format. I've tried OS 9.1 and OS 8.1 (clean install), same phenomenon,
the CD spins up, but isn't mounted. Tried two different CD-drives. Tried
both scsi-buses, external and internal. Nothing helps.

BUT

- It is possible to boot off the install CD (8.0)

- *Every* disk tool program *sees* the *CD-drive* with SCSI-ID, model
number, everthing.

- When I launch the CD-Player the OS tells me that the CD-ROM drive "isn't
ready" (in Swedish).

- All extensions are activated.

One disk performance test program was able to access the CD-ROM somehow,
but it hang eventually.

I don't have a clue what to do.

IBM 4x CD-ROM SCSI-drive
Pioneer 303 SCSI DVD-ROM drive
No third party hardware.

Any hints greatly appreciated!

Unfortunately it didn't help by setting the ID to 3. I acquired the Mac for
only approx
40 USD and since it had 160MB RAM i thought it would be a nice thing to run
BeOS
on it. But to install BeOS I definitely need a CD-ROM reader that works.

:-(

Next I shall try to un-check the on-board termination on the harddrive and
instead
terminate with an active terminatior at the end of the cable. I've got not
too much hope though since the same fenomenon has occured under so many
different configurations hardware wise and software/OS wise.

Internal and no it's 4. Thank's for this. I had no idea that the ID
mattered.

Is the CD Drive internal or external? If Internal it should read ID 3.
I assume the DVD-ROM is on the SCSI chain. Perhaps remove it while trying
the CD ROM. SCSI, as you probably know is touchy at the best of times. I
have an external La Cie External burner SCSI and when hooked up top my Beige
G3, the internal CD ROM will NOT mount. Hopefully, your problem is similar
and merely means a physical hook up and unhook up on your SCSI chain after
paying attention to your SCSI termination.
