Question about SimpleTech 250GB USB2.0 7200 RPM External 250 GB IDE Hard Drive
Yeah, I've got one of those SimpleTech portable harddrives 250gb, and I have the software, but the cd has a big scratch on the front side, so It does't work, and neither will the harddrive. I have xp pro on one laptop, and vista on another, and still it can't be recononized. I even took it apart, and made sure everthing was in place, but it still won't work. Where can I download the driver for it.
Are you using a power source for the unit, it has to have its own power supply to work. if you have the cable connected for the power and the usb connected to the laptop/pc, go to the windows log and right click on the logo, a menu will pop up. click on device manager on the device manager settings you should see your drive probably with an x on it, click on the drive and go to the update drivers and make sure you're on the internet. and click update drivers, if there is a driver that windows can use it will install the driver if not, then windows will not load a driver. if still not working try this web site Solvusoft Microsoft Gold Certified Company and download the drivers from them. if this still does not work then replace the usb cable as it may be faulty.

A 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
The service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.

Can you access this drive on a non-Vista system? If so, try the Simple Tech WWW site for a diagnostics program?
There are also a number of other software programs that can detect and mark the bad sectors or locations on your drive as bad.
Once those sectors are marked (at the FAT Table) as bad Vista may allow you to access that drive again. IF it does, copy everything available to a DVD. Now reformat the drive but DON'T trust it.
Bottom line is that I personally would not trust that drive again with ANY data that is important to me... I hope you will agree with me. If you decide to use it anyway please backup to two locations or drives!

It sounds like you might have a problem with the power supply.
I have seen MANY external hard drives with failing power supplies. Take it to the store you purchased it from for a check up, it should still be under warrantee if its only 3 months old.

you need a commercial program like partition magic to do this, there is no sys-built-in way.
