The MP500 is not a fax machine. If you want to send and receive faxes using the printer, you need to have a dial-up modem in your computer with a telephone line connected. The computer then needs some kind of fax application like Microsoft Fax, which does the actual sending and receiving. The printer is just used as a scanner when you send, and to print received faxes.
If you have all this connected already and you can't receive, check your incoming telephone line and fax software settings to be sure the line is answering correctly.
If you mean that the recievers of your fax sees a black line down the center of the fax the problem is in your scanner head not the print engine, there may be a an obstruction in front of the imaging head. If the line is on your print when printing from a computer, then it is the printer, and the problem could be a print head, or contamination of a paper path component, check smudges of on drive rollers and guides. Don't understand why it would be the purge unit.

It only uses the large black ink cartridge and I have a drawer full of small 8BK cartridges. How can I get it to use the small black cartridge and not the large black cartridge? Thanks
If the large black line is on the back of the page, it is because too much ink is built up under the transport and transferring to the exit rollers. There is a mylar shield needed under the transport after cleaning the rollers to keep the ink from coming up again. Usually a shop repair, around $89.00
the waste ink pads are full ..when the black line appears it is an indicator that the waste ink pads are full it is usualy because the printer has reached its life expectancy the solution is either buy a new printer or pay a tech about 170 dollars to repair it
