Question about Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) Console

14 Answers

My PS3 will play blu-ray games and movies for only a short time, 10-30 minutes, before freezing. However, I can still access the home screen using the PS button, and can navigate through menus fine. When I try to quit the game though, I need to use the power switch to shut down the playstation. Blu-rays usually won't start up for about an hour after that, after which it will allow me to play for another 10-30 mins. I can still play DVDs indefinitely, even right after it freezes on blu-rays, and can play anything off my harddrive, including demo games. It seems to be a problem with the blu-ray laser, but I dont't know if it's broken or just dirty.

I've tried the Maxell Blu-Ray cleaning CD several times, but it seems to have little effect. I can open up the PS3 with the help of tutorials and manually clean the lens, but I just want to know if its just a dirty lens that is the problem, or if it is something worse.

  • adle1 Feb 19, 2009

I've also tried vacuuming the PS3 from all the vents, using compressed air, and using the Maxell Blu-Ray cleaning CD. None of these attempts seemed to have any effect.

  • adle1 Feb 19, 2009

Do I need to open my PS3 to get directly to the lens, or will repeated Maxell cleaning CD/vacuums/compressed air do the trick?

  • adle1 Feb 19, 2009

Sorry about repeating myself so often, but I'm new to FixYa. Do I need to open up my PS3 and wipe off the lens manually, since the cleaning CD, compressed air, and vacuum didn't seem to work? If so, what kind of solution should I use on the laser?

  • adle1 Feb 19, 2009

After calling Sony's help hotline, all they do is give me the option to send the playstation in for repair, which will cost 150 dollars (I'm out of warranty by about 2 months) and lots of time. I want to use this as a very last resort; will opening the PS3 and manually cleaning the lens save me this trouble?

  • adle1 Feb 19, 2009

I have already tried a Blu-Ray cleaning ROM, and it does not seem to work. The one I used is the Maxell wind vortex CD, or something like that. Should I use a CD with bristles that will physically brush the lens?

  • adle1 Feb 19, 2009

I thought it might be an overheating problem as well, which is why I've already vacuumed/used compressed air many times to no avail. Might opening the PS3 up, and using compressed air on the exposed interior work better?

  • adle1 Feb 19, 2009

This problem was actually the same before and after using a lens cleaning CD. Also, the CD I used had no bristles, just two holes in the CD the drew air over the lens. I don't think this type of cleaning CD was the problem.

  • adle1 Feb 19, 2009

I feel like calling Sony would be a waste of 150 dollars, because the Blu-Ray laser is obviously not broken since games and movies work perfectly fine for a period of time before freezing. Also, they will wipe my hard drive, which is someting that I want to avoid at all costs. Is there no other way to determine if a dirty lens is at fault?

  • adle1 Feb 19, 2009

I believe that I have the latest firmware, as I am always connected to the internet and upgrade as soon as the PS3 informs me of a new update.

  • adle1 Feb 19, 2009

Alex I will try this solution as soon as I can get the Arctic Silver delivered to my house. I will let you know if this solution works. Thank you.

  • adle1 Feb 19, 2009

Alex I lost your comments about the Arctic Silver 5 by re-posting (again, new to FixYa). Can I get them back please?

  • adle1 Feb 20, 2009

I have disassembled the PS3, down to the blu-ray laser, and cleaned it with alcohol. After reassembly, it performs exactly the same as before, freezing after a crtain amount of time during blu-ray playback. Any suggestions?

When it is lens problem it often does not read to start. If it starts fine all disks then it is not a lens problem.

The most common is a firmware problem, otherwise is a bad laser unit or some defective chip overheating.

Download the latest firmware from Sony, if that does not fix it call Sony and see if they acknowledge that this may be a factory defect and give you a replacement, however if ps had been disassembled this may invalidate cover.

Hope this had been helpful.

Hi there
You will be pleased to know that you are not the only one that are having problems with the PS3.
The problem is mainly with the latest firmware updates (although Sony will NOT admit this) and in some cases the Blue-Ray capability is disabled altogether!!
If you have done all you can regarding cleaning dust from the inside using compressed air and the games and movies still freeze, try extending your warranty, wait a week or so and send it in for repairs, this will cost you a fraction of the price that you would pay out of warranty

Good luck and thanks for using Fixya!!!

I think u need to get the lense cleaned or refer mannual cleaning the lense, moreover is it with a specific disc or with all types of blue ray disc.

If you have a blue writter try burning the exact copy of that disc and then use it.

Hi there,

I have had the same problem but have managed to resolve it.

This problem is due to over heating of the CPU and GPU.

If your PS3 is out of warrently please try these steps, and i will guarentee this will sort your problem out.

Usings This Link Here

Dissasemle the PS3 just removings the top cover for now, Then place a cooling fan that you may use in your house to cool it for the time being.

You will then need to buy yourself some Artic Silver 5 Thermal Paste from ebay For £5.

This is the problem, the orignal thermal compound sony uses is the cheap nasty stuff that dryes up between the GPU and CPU and then does not transfer any heat at all to the heat sink, so the inside fan is useless.

Artic silver 5 is 99.9% pure silver and will sort your cooling problem out. please follow the link above to get to the CPU and GPU.

The PS3 is very simple to take apart so you cant go wrong, Dont worry it is nothing to do with the blu ray laser so please dont disassemble the Drive unit.

Please Rate This Solution.

Thanks

Alex

Hi, this is the issue, the Cd lens cleaners that we use to clean the ps3 is the cause of this type of damage. This technology is very primitive and, is also very damaging to the delicate lens that is used to read your games. the brush technology that most lens cleaners use will ultimately shift the lens assembly, causing this disruption and freezing during loading and play. unfortunately, this is not a in house repair and you will have to send the unit back for repair. i suggest you find some alternative way to clean the lens in the future. They are developing alternative cleansing devices soon to come.

Here's a confirmation test that you can use to make sure its your blue ray lens for sure. if possible, insert a PS2 game. if it plays the PS2 game, its the blue ray that has failed.

It sounds like an overheating issue. Go buy a can of compressed air and blow out all the vent on your PS3.
When trying to run BluRay discs, the console has to work much harder, thus generating more heat. Thus causing the freezing within a few minutes. These consoles are little dust magnets, no matter how clean your home is, they will attract every speck of dust around them and draw it right into the unit.
So give it a good blowing out and see if that fixes your problem.

First off how long have you owned the unit? I would recommend having it serviced/repaired as it sounds like you may be in need of a new blu-ray drive. If you need further assistance please let me know, also please take a moment to accept and rate my solution accordingly.
Thank you,

It is very possible that cleaning the lens manually could fix your problem. Its also possible that it won't. Either way you will know if you need to replace your blu-ray or not so I would definitely give it a try.

IF the blu-ray laser gets even a speck of dust on it it will not work and will cause this problem. You need to clean the laser with some compressed air or a blu-ray laser cleaner and your system will work ok. I had thi same problem with mine due to fires in our area and had to do this about 7 times until I was able to get all the loose dust out of the house and the system

This is a common complaint on many blu ray players, I was able to help this issue by installing the latest Firmware which can be downloaded from the Sony web site, refer to user manual on how to install it, my system required I burn a disk with the new firmware on it, then the player took over.

My PS3 plays PS2 games fine, but freezes up when playing PS3 games. When it freezes up on the ps3 games, the main console menu still works fine. How do I get my PS3 to play PS3 games without freezing?

The issue is the Blu-Ray diode. If one disc stops working 100% of the time but the other two types still work (DVD and CD) then the blu-ray diode died. The good news is that a handy person can fix it for about $45. Just do your research and watch a few youtube videos on replacing the laser and opening the case to make sure you are comfortable. I just did it and it was fine. You can buy the laser assembly on eBay, just make sure you go local and get a warranty. Don't buy overseas.

My new 3.15 ps3 won't play blu-ray but will play everything else no problem. no problems to play games or to play normal dvd's. When playing a blu-ray the UNIVERSAL part at the start of the movie plays...

f the Blu-ray Disc does not support 1080p 24Hz video mode, the video output may not display properly.

If a Blu-ray Disc movie is not loading properly or is freezing on a title screen, this may be caused by the PLAYSTATION 3 attempting to download BD-Live content from congested movie studio servers. If you experience this issue, you may choose to temporarily bypass the BD-Live content until the congestion at the movie studio servers has cleared.

Go to Settings icon (Settings) > Video Settings icon (Video Settings) > [BD Internet Connection], select "Confirm". Then reload the Blu-ray movie and the PLAYSTATION 3 will prompt you if you wish to allow the disc to access BD-Live content. Choose to not access BD-Live content to see if the movie will now load.
For some reason you seem to think this is a PS3 problem. Why do you think this is a PS3 problem? If you can play PS3 games, then I will say it is not a PS3 problem, as all PS3 games are on Blu-ray, and if you were having problems playing PS3 games, then that could account for the movie not working.

Since only the movie isn't working, I am going to say you have a defective Blu-ray disc. Did you just buy this movie, or have you viewed it before using the PS3? If you have never viewed it on the PS3, then the problem lies in the disc, and you need to take it back and have it exchanged.

If you have played the disc in the PS3 before (the PS3 you are having a problem with, not a different PS3 or Blu-ray player), or you still think it is a PS3 problem, then use the "Disc Troubleshooting" support page. Normally, if a Blu-ray movie will not play, it won't play at all, and it is because the Blu-ray laser has gone out. It sounds to me that the disc is bad, but this is only going on the information you have supplied.

Here is the Disc Troubleshooting support page mentioned above:http://playstation.custhelp.com/app/answ…

**EDIT**
Sorry, I just noticed you gave a UK link. Here is the support page for the UK. You will have to do a search on the site to find the Disc Troubleshooting page for your region.http://uk.playstation.com/support/

Blu-ray playback freeze

1st DO NOT EXPOSE THE BLU-RAY FOR ANY REASON - You run the risk of blindness and radiation exposure!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Please advise what FirmWare Version you are currently running on. You can find this under;
Settings>System Settings>System Information.

Once I have this info I will provide you with the best fix if needed but It is probably down to out of date drivers. There have been a number of changes to the blurays drivers recently and if these havent been updated then this will most likely be your problem. To solve this all you need to do is take your system online and download the newest FirmWare update. - There are people who NEVER use the system online for different reasons. Since you brought the system BluRay has gone through 4 upgrades. Any BluRays you buy now wll likely be incompatible for playback with the drivers you have on your system.

If you need any further advice on getting online with thew PS3 please post it as a new issue and I will help you - but the PS3 talks you through it to be honest

I answer this question like ten times a day so don't feel bad.

The blu-ray laser in your PS3 is a three part laser (cd / dvd / blu-ray). They last only 1-3 years with average use. It's a Sony defect.

You are Partially right.
Ps3 actually work with 2 different diode laser inside.one is Blue and one is red and both working on 2 separate circuit but with the same coil.i do believe the blue diode is dead or defective and that`s why you are able to read dvd(regular one) but no blu ray dvd or ps3 games.Try to clean your lens or replace your laser and you will resolve your problem
