The scanner is bad and I don't need it. Is there any way to
either turn it off or remove it? I am hoping there is a way to by
pass it rather than buy a new one. I took the machine apart but
couldn't tell where the scanner is.

Re: HP 4315 won't fax or copy
No. A new scanner assy will cost as much as a new machine. You need the scanner for faxing and copying.. The machine will not work without a scanner assy, it is the light bar that moves across the page.

There are generally two print devices set up when an all-in-one with a fax is set up - one is the fax device and the other is the printer. Make sure you have the print device set as the default printer and/or that when you want to print that the printer and not the fax is selected.
Setting the proper printer as default would depend on your operating system, but for most versions of Windows you would go to the printers folder, right click on the non-fax version of the Officejet 4315 and select "Set as default".
Good Day, I would like to suggest use your hp solution center click the tab for the HP All-in-One.In the Device support area, click Onscreen Guide or Troubleshooting. If you click Onscreen guide, a pop-up menu appears. You can choose to Help for the HP All-in-One. and If you click Troubleshooting, the Troubleshooting and support page open.
Good Day Sir, I have a solution to your problem, hope this will help you.
"HP 4315 officejet fax failed" solution:
Turn off the machine by using the ON button and then unplug the power cord from the back of the machine. After a few seconds, plug the power cord back in and turn the power on.
Try to send or receive a test fax.
If you are running the test from the Fax Setup Wizard (windows) or Fax Setup Utility(Mac), Make sure the Machine is not busy completing another task, such as receiving a fax or making a copy. Check the display for a message indicating that the machine is busy.If it is busy, wait until it is finished and in the idle state.
Make sure you use the phone cord that came with the machine. If you do not use the supplied phone cord to connect from the telephone wall jack to the HP All-in-One, YOU MIGHT NOT BE ABLE TO SEND OR RECEIVE faxes. then after you plug run the test again.
If you are using a PHONE SPLITTER, this can cause faxing problems. connect the machine directly to the telephone wall jack.
run the test again to make sure it passes and the machine is ready for faxing.
Click on "control panel" on your computer, click on "printers and faxes", click on "install printer" (left of screen on my program). Then the installation Wizard should come up and follow its instructions.
Whether or not you have to go to "scanners" (same page as "printers and faxes") I'm not sure. Do the first steps I have listed for a start and if scanner doesnt work use scanner wizard. Hope that helps. Good luck.
I have the 4315 and have been scanning with it for years; however, when it hangs up on starting the scan,it is usually due to the quality of paper. For example, if the edge that is inserted is not straight and crisp, it may hang up. Try taking a brand new sheet of paper with test writing on it and see if it goes through. Does it make the sound like it is trying to scan and just can't "catch" the paper? Also do you get an error message?
