It's a Sony defect with the blu-ray lasers. They only last 1-3 years with average use. If your PS3 is less than a year old and you still have the original receipt Sony will repair the problem for free. Otherwise they're going to charge you $150 for the repair. You can reach them at: 1-800-345-SONY

Unless you have a technical background in electronics there's nothing I would suggest doing. A firmware update and or CD /DVD cleaner disk will do nothing for your problem. I've fixed more than 100 PS3's with this exact problem so I know exactly what I'm talking about.

Tip

Wii "Unable to read the disc" or "Disc could not be read" Messages

If you are getting one of the above error messages:
  • This message can display if you eject a disc during game play. If this is when the message displayed, make sure that you return to the Wii Menu before changing discs if you wish to play a different game.

  • If your Wii console is laying flat, it may be positioned upside down. Ensure that is positioned right-side up: the game disc slot should be above all three buttons and the SD Card slot.
  • Ensure that you are properly loading a Game Disc. insertdisccorrect.gif
    • If your console is placed vertically, the disc label will face to the right.
    • If your console is placed horizontally, the disc label will face upwards

  • If you know you are inserting the Game Disc correctly, but are still have the same problem with only one game (or if you only have one game), try cleaning the Game Disc by following the disc cleaning procedures.
If the above information did not resolve the issue or it is happening with most or all of your games, a repair is necessary.

Both of my kids have DS Lites. Both systems aren't recognizing that there is a game inserted. Sometimes (maybe 1 out of 30 times inserted) we will get lucky and it will work so I know it isn't the games....

You really shouldn't. This is a design flaw, worthy of a class action lawsuit comparable to the one Microsoft faced for the Xbox 360 RROD fiasco. With the old ds, the gold contacts would bend and break over time from games being inserted and ejected and such. Nintendo "rectified" the problem by adding a spring to force it into the right place. Pretty stupid on their R&D dept.'s part. Forcing electronics only breaks them over time. The average lifespan of a DS lite is about a year. If you bought your kids their systems at about the same time, that would explain why they both dont work. I recommend ditching the DS. Either invest in PSPs, as they are more versatile, and you can pirate games on them, so you don't have to pay $60 for a game because you can download them on the internet. But if your kids really want to keep the DS, I have a suggestion. My sister has a lite, and has had it since it first came out. If you pay the $75 to get it fixed, it could be cheaper in the long run, as it will never break again if you do what i'm about to tell you, and you'll never pay for another game again. My sister prevented this on her Ds Lite because she never ejects her cartridge. she has something called an R4 chip. Its really easy to use. the R4 is a cartridge that has a slot that can house a micro SD card. You can actually download games to this chip, for free from various places on the internet. And the DS will never break again from wear and tear, because you dont eject the R4 if you want more games, you eject the micro SD from the R4. Shoot me an email at edchen111@gmail.com if you want to know more about this. No i do not work for R4, i sincerely believe this course of action will save you the most money. Here is R4s website. Take a look.

Game is in Ps3, wont eject, says no game in the xmb screen

if the disc is spinning with some clacking noise then its all right, use the manual eject button 3 to 4 times. Now the disc should be sited on the disc plate. If you think that this works but not through the software then update the firmware. On new slim PS3 disc stuck,it doesnt void your warranty.

Wii makes grinding noise, when disc is inserted, it immediately ejects it, accepts it back in, then ejects it onto the floor while making horrible grinding noises

There is either something inside of your Wii's DVD Drive blocking the insertion of the disc, or some of the gears inside of the DVD drive are damaged. Lots of times, one of the kids will stuff a penny, credit card, or some other foreign object inside of the Wii's disc slot. The following website sells the DVD drive mechanisms and does repairs on the Wii as well:

Cannot insert game disc into slot

Check your waranty but I believe by now it's void.

Get some canned air inside of it and blow it out. If you were agressive with putting your game in, the feed could be damaged. It's a lightweight material that would break before it bends; if you have any small kids who could have even potentially (hit it, dropped it, misused it, (not limited to one)), there could be something wrong.

Best thing to do is clean it. I personally think your disc feed is damaged.

Open it up (if you're out of waranty) and clean off the lazer and anything that looks dirty. Use a q-tip for the lazer but be careful because it's very sensitive.

I'm very sorry your wii doesn't work and I hope i've helped you resolve your problem.

Good Luck!

Wii console will not eject disk

I managed to eject a WII disc out manually very easily:
- Disconnect the drive
- You see the white plastic mechanism on your right side and the wheel connected to the motor
- turn the wheel towards the back side of the drive while pushing the half inch square plastic piece towards the left.
You will see the disc coming out while you are turning the wheel.
