If another monitor is available check it on your system and check yours on another. this is the simplest way to eliminate possibilities. could be your video card all together, just not kicking out a signal

Hello,
May be the problem comes from the Cpu.
Try to see if the cable from the monitor is firmly connected to the cpu.
One thing more may be the vga card is having problem.
Try to test the screen with another Cpu. Or the cpu with another monitor.
The amber mode is normal as the screen is not receiving signal from the cpu.
At times the memory chip also report this problem (no display or sleep mode)
Do hear any beep sound or any other Errors??
OK try this

Screen says check signal cable - have check my cables....

Not really...

First check if the cable connected from the monitor is secured and properly connected to the video card of the CPU.

"Check signal cable" will only be display if there is no signal coming from the CPU.. that signal Passes through the video card..

Check the status of your video card.....and see also if the CPU is working and not dead set.

Hope this help...
Much appreciated if you rate this help.. thanks

Screen Goes Blank

Ive seen this on other monitors. Look for a 1 and 2. Some monitors do NOT auto detect a signal, and this one might not. Look for a way to set the monitor from Digital input to VGA input. Try that and see.

Monitor problem

Hi, sandjkroll, this kind of problem could be because of ur monitor or even because of the on board display  card on ur motherboard. To check ur monitor, u unplg display cable which goes to ur cpu and the power cable which goes to ur cpu.
Them connect the power plug to mains, so no cable from the monitor should go to the CPU. Then u swithch on the the poower suply, and on the monitor. I
If ur monitor displays elongated screen still, and shows signal not found, and no display comes that means ur monitor needs to be send for service. and if there are no elongated screen and says no signal found, ur monitors fine, ur motherboad has a problem

Can't find video signal

If screen says "Signal cable not connected " all the time till power led switches to Amber chances are monitor is ok and problem is with graphic card or cpu.Connect to Known working CPU and confirm that monitor is the problem.
If same problem persists on another working cpu after changing signal cable, the interface board in the monitor could be defective.
