Dear Videophiles,
I have many DV tapes that I would like to reuse.
What's the best approach?
1. Just record over the existing signal
2. Blank the tape before reusing
If you recommend 2 then please recommend a bulk eraser for DV tapes.
Does bulk erasing remove timecode?... or does timecode remain??

PS: Beware of Panasonic AY-DVM60E tapes. They're less expensive but their
performance is suspect. I took a ten pieces on a trip to India and had poor
results. i.e., frequent shearing in the picture on playback. This happened
on many tapes, not just one. I suspected my camera at first (Sony TRV7) but
had it checked out on return and it passed muster.

The only issue I my DHR-1000 wants to record in LP mode on the Panasonic
DVM-80 tapes, the metal contacts on the 80 min cassette apparently fool the
DHR-1000 into going into an undocumeted LP record mode! Strange but true.
My policy is to resue tape (an tape) only when I can recover should a problem
occure with the recycled tape.

I had the sane problem with Panasonic mini DV tapes. I had the camera
checked and it was fine but the tape was shot after only one use. I've
spoke to a few people here who say they will no longer use Panasonic Mini
DV tapes.
It's suprising as I've always found Panasonic products first rate.

tape is really bad; two others only have problems here and there.
I have previously read that you should stick with one brand of tape
because the binders used by different manufacturers can be
incompatible and result in gumming up the heads. Can any recommend a
method for switching from one brand of tape to another? Is a standard
cleaing cassette enough? Does it matter which brand of cleaner?
Also, can someone recommend a better tape?
Thanks,
Kevin
