Check the rollers. Remove the tray, put your hand in the cavity and feel the rollers. are they bald? If so thats all it is.

If they have a marked texture, they are OK and in that case, you will need to replace the PIU (a paper input unit)..not do-able for an amateur. (sorry) But easily done by a pro.

I would recommend replacing the PIU paper Input unit on the printer.Having repaired several hundreds of these printers this always rectifies these feed proble. The clutches can go weak as can the paper tray lift mechanics

If you put legal paper in tray 3 and it prints fine but letter size paper feeding long edge first jams by the top right door you need to replace the second pass roller or the paper input unit. The input unit is $100 to $150 and has the 2nd pass roller in it. the 2nd pass roller is about $20 - $30. I have installed about 20 of each and have it down to about an hour for the input unit and about a half hour longer for the 2nd pass roller.

if you have trouble with all paper sizes in tray 3 and have cleaned/replaced the feed and separation rollers you probably have a bad sensor or a bad clutch.

Check the rollers in tray 3 to see if they are slick. If not, replace the paper input unit C4214-69017.

hp printers typically do not have an error message to cover every known condition, thus if the printer needs maintenance in an undefined area, it will invariably indicate a paper jam. The printer usually responds to the installation of a maintenance kit which will include transfer roller, pickup rollers, and fuser.

SOURCE: hp laserjet 8150. i have a problem, tray 3 empty,

CAUSE: This error message indicates the paper present sensor flag in one of the trays does not detect paper in the tray. This could be caused by one of the following:

  • A broken sensor flag
  • The tray paper guides being set too close and restricting the paper from being pulled
  • The tray is not lifting
SOLUTION: Follow the steps below to determine the cause of a false TRAY X EMPTY message. Tray 2 empty
  1. Verify there is paper in the tray.
  2. Open the duplex unit access door just above Tray 2 on the front of the printer.
  3. Check the black-paper present flag by looking in through the duplex access door.
  4. Open and close Tray 2 and observe the tray lifting looking through the duplex unit access door.
The tray lifts but the error is still present
  1. Inspect the paper present flag on the PIU located just behind the pickup rollers. Ensure the flags are present and not damaged.
  2. Remove the tray guides from the tray and reseat them. Ensure the guides are seated correctly and are in the correct slot for the size paper in the tray. Add paper to the tray and try printing again.
  3. Try another known good tray, if available.
The tray does not lift and the error is still present
  1. Remove the tray, remove the paper in the tray, and inspect the lifting plate in the tray for damage. Ensure it will lift freely by hand.
  2. Try another known good tray if available.
Tray 3 empty
  1. Verify there is paper in the tray.
  2. Remove Tray 2.
  3. Open and close Tray 3 and verify it lifts by observing through the Tray 2 cavity.
  3. Try another known good tray if available.
The tray does not lift and the error is still present
  1. Remove the tray, remove the paper in the tray, and inspect the lifting plate in the tray for damage. Ensure it will lift freely by hand.
  2. Try another known good tray if available.
Tray 4 empty
  1. Verify there is paper in the tray
  2. Open Tray 4 and check for an extra **** of paper stored on the left side of the tray. This can cause the tray to stall while lifting and result in a tray empty message.
  3. Defeat the interlock in the vertical transfer unit (VTU). Open and close Tray 4 and watch the tray lift through the VTU door on the lower-right side of the printer.
NOTE: Follow troubleshooting steps for Trays 2 and 3 when working with the 2 X 500 sheet-input tray.
The tray lifts but the error is still present
  1. Check the tray guides to ensure the guides are seated corrected and are in the correct slots for the paper size in the tray.
  2. Inspect the paper present sensor for damage.
  3. Check for any broken plastic pieces in the tray that may be a broken sensor flag.
The tray does not lift and the error is still present Defeat the VTU interlock on the right side of Tray 4. Open and close Tray 4 and observe the tray lifting.

Start by pulling out tray 2 and setting it on the floor. Next take out tray 3 and slide it into tray 2. Print from tray 2. If it works, take the tray on the floor and put it into the tray 3 slot. Print from tray 3. If it fails change the feed rollers.

Could be the rubber roller that feeds paper through to the toner. Use a product called rubber rejuvenator which you can find at a Staples or Office depo...Spray it on the roller and it should soften the rubber and allow for the roller to grip the paper better. It could also be the flap on your toner getting stuck and not allowing the paper to pass through.

HP LaserJet 5550DTN jams at transfer unit

Normal 0 I suggest you get a sheet of Card Stock (Heavy paper) and place it in the feed way. Then press the print button applying a slight amount of pressure on the Card Stock so it will feed through the printer. The reason for this is in some cases I have been able to clear the paper track of debris that was deposited there over time.
Worth a try, as I have fixed a number of printers this way, saving costly repairs.
Hope this helps. Bud
