I have an R50E Type 1834-2LG. I wish to replace the DVD drive which is
Ultrabay Enhanced CD-RW/DVD whatever that means.
The FRU is 92P6573.
Can I replace it with an 92P6579.
I have tried looking at the compatibility info at the lenovo website
but I can't understand it.

OK, that means the drive can't read the disc due to errors. What kind
of discs are these (type [DVD-ROM, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, etc.]
and brand)? What wrote them?
It may be the disc type and/or brand. It may be the formatting. It may
be a firmware issue.
For example, there are certain types of poor DVD-R discs that are hard
to read in some of my DVD drives, particularly when not well written.
Likewise poor DVD+RW discs.
Another example is that the DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive in my T-40 couldn't read
UDF-formatted DVD+RW discs until I updated its firmware. Now it works
just fine.

My bad... I thought you
Yes I tried that works in "CD-RW mode" but not in "DVD Read mode"
- I get a "cyclic redundancy check" error trying to copy a simple text
file.
The lectures are spread over 6 DVD's the drive can't read any of them.
noted.
gotcha.

Correct.
Have you tried to simply copy the files from the drive to hard disk
using Windows Explorer? I suggested things like this to try in our
prior exchange but never heard further from you.
As noted in my prior reply, it could nonetheless be marginal, readable
in one machine, but not in another. That's not uncommon.
Possibly, but I'd only reach that conclusion with a lot more testing.
I'd first make sure the firmware is up to date, since that can make a
big difference, in addition to doing more testing. Otherwise, you might
well wind up in the same place, or worse.
That's why I boiled it down for you.
The System Service Parts page for your R50e
<# shows correct optical drives to be 12.7 mm high, including the 92P6569.

Does that means it can read CD's but not write them? I posted here a
month ago about a problem I was having reading video media and you were
kind enough to reply
I did check out the sources you told me to look at .. videohelp.com was
rather overwhelming - the cdrfaq was much more manageable but I didn't
find anything relevant to my problem (as below there is nothing wrong
with my CD-RW capability).
AAMOF in the 15 months I have had the drive I have never used it to
write a CD. In fact I tested it for the first time today. The drive
seems to function perfectly as a CD-RW. I was able to format write to
and read from a CD.
My problem is that I have a bunch of lectures recorded on to a DVD in
RealPlayer format and the drive just seizes whenever I try to play them
- I know the DVD is not faulty because I have been able to play it in
another machine. It's like the drive is ok as a CDRW but malfunctions
as a DVD-ROM.
Hence I am looking at a replacement and selling my drive to offset the
cost.
I checked the link the page doesn't say that the 92P6569 is a 12.7mm
drive.
Sorry to appear dumb - I don't find the information on the lenovo site
at all clear or helpful in working out what drives are compatible with
my machine.

That's a 12.7 mm thick DVD-ROM + CD-RW drive.
Not without an adapter -- that's a "slim" drive, which means it's 9.5 mm
thick. It's also just a DVD-ROM drive -- why would you want to lose
CD-RW capability?
To avoid the need for an adapter, you at least need a 12.7 mm thick
drive; e.g., ThinkPad CD-RW/DVD-ROM Combo Ultrabay Enhanced Drive
P/N 73P3275 FRU 92P6569.
However, IBM/Lenovo states:
Note: Not supported with the ThinkPad R50e systems since the Ultrabay
drive is fixed.
<# I'm not familiar with the R50e, so I don't know how big a problem that
might be.
