Question about JVC GR-X5 Mini DV Digital Camcorder

2 Answers

JVC GR-X5e camcorder, lens cap message. Does not show a picture.

It shows all menus, numbers and graphics on LCD, but seems like there's no picture coming through the lens. In both modes, video and still. It seems like it can not see anything as if the lens cap was on all the time.

Could this be a problem with sensor.. CCDs? Lens? Something else?

Thank You.

It shows video on tape in PLAY mode, so I think the LCD screen is fine, but in RECORD mode, its set on VIDEO and M (Manual) it just dont show any picture. Just like it would be in the complete darkness. When I zoom in, I can see noise. The grain gets bigger. It does record audio, but the picture is blank black.

    Thank You again,

Nothing happens. Set it to M and pressed exposure twice. That just opens Gain settings for a second and lets me by rolling the wheel set the gain ... + / - but thats it.. :(

There are a few things to check here.  First: Check to make sure your LCD screen is not turned off. Go into the video display settings and go to "on screen". There are 3 settings there. Make sure LCD is on. Second: if the LCD screen is on in the menu, make sure it's brightness setting is all the way up. Again, it's another menu item. Third: make sure you are recording video. Either connect the camcorder to a DVR or VCR with the DV cable, or connect it to a PC with a usb cable. If you see your video there, then it is recording video and maybe the screen is toast. Let me know how it goes.

If you will permit, lets try something else. Have you checked the iris and exposure lock? Maybe the iris is locked almost closed.
Set to M and press exposure twice. That should return it to automatic iris.  Let me know if that works.

This problem (the screen with no picture) can be caused by a number of problems). One is that a connection with in the camera has disconnected. Another is the possibility of the LCD being bad or broken (some of these LCDs are hard to detect broken screens). Another problem could be with in the circuits has stopped working. Another could be that there is a problem with the CCD sensor. If any menus can be shown, then the problem is within the lens or sensor or something related. If you can see nothing on the screen, no matter what you pick, then the problems are harder to detect as to what is wrong.

There was an earlier post that explained the black ribbon between the LCD viewfinder and the body of the camera is split. You would have to buy a new LCD viewfinder for about $90 or send it back to them to fix for around $250. The same thing happened to my camera and I can actually is the split. If you close it down more than half way the picture shows up. I called Panasonic and they said you have to buy the whole LCD, that you can't just buy the ribbon. They don't even have a part number for just the ribbon. Good luck.

Black lcd screen on Ixus 70 shows icons but will not take picture

A stuck shutter is another common failure mode for digital cameras. The symptoms of a stuck or "sticky" shutter are very similar to CCD image sensor failure. The camera may take black pictures (for shutter stuck closed), or the pictures may be very bright and overexposed, especially when taken outdoors (for shutter stuck open).

To confirm a stuck shutter, put the camera in any mode other than "Auto", and turn the flash OFF (you don't want to blind yourself for the next step). Next look down the lens and take a picture. You should see a tiny flicker in the center of the lens as the shutter opens and closes. If no movement is seen, then you likely have a stuck shutter. If so, please see the following for further info and a simple fix that may help:

Shooting mode shows nothing.

Hello,

I just had this issue with my camera (my 15 year old son solved it for me ;-) ).

The viewfinder was active in "record" mode and the LCD was "active" because you could see a little back light but no image. The "playback" mode would let me review pictures in the LCD though so I know it is capable of showing information.

If you push the display key/button a couple of times you can see the picture move from the viewfinder to the LCD and have just a picture and or a picture and information.

So try setting the camera to "record" mode (lens comes out) and then push the "display button" which is on the back of the camera just to the right of the LCD on the lower right side several times and see if the LCD starts to work.

It could be that somehow the display button was pushed by mistake.

The problem is the lens is not opening, If you look into the lens you can see it is closed. This will require a trip to the repair shop.

No image in lcd screen

Hi:
This sounds internal and could be a bad ccd (sensor). If you call Nikon at their toll free number and ask them, it may be possible that they will fix this for free. They will let you know if it is too much to fix, in which case it will be returned to you. With Nikon you will need to pay for shipping to Nikon's repair facility.
For possible repair see this link and call the toll free number at the service center... https://www.nikondealernet.com/sal4/
Take care
