Sandisk Cruzer 1GB drive suddenly not working

I've used this Cruzer drive for years without trouble... ever since removing the U3 software. I use it to move data between my home MacBook and my work Dell.

Last night, it was plugged into my MacBook, and as I turned my macbook a little, I knocked the cruzer against something. It slid sideways in the USB slot enough that MacOS gave me the "Drive Unsafe Removal" message.

Neither I, nor the Genius at the local Apple store could help. It doesn't even show up on my MacBook under USB devices under system profiler, and my work PC doesn't recognize it either. Mac's Drive Setup software doesn't see it either.

We suspect the file system got dorked. Any ideas?

I haven't tried every utility out there, but no utility I tried recognizes the usb device. It just doesn't show up.

I used my 2 GB flash drive this morning and it was working fine when i was getting ready to get off i ejected it and wait for the box to appear and pulled it out of the drive.

When i arrived at school how ever my flash drive was not working on any of the computers. I plugged it in and the light would not come or anything.

DO NOT panic! Try this: restart your computer and plug your USB in again(this helps to clean the buffer), see if you drive can be recognized.

If you still can't access the data inside, try this data recovery program Wondershare Data Recovery. Get the program here,

Mac Data Recovery (Mac OS version)
Windows Data Recovery (Windows Version)

Take care - Before those items are recovered, stop saving more files to the USB in case the file data are overwritten!

You might try to use a recovery product that is designed to restore deleted files or files from a reformatted USB key. Search on "USB Flash Drive Data Recovery" in Google and find a free trial utility. A good utility will not damage your key's data in any way.

Want to remove U3 software and completely wipe SanDisk Cruzer Micro flash drive.

Try using a tool like Rufus http://rufus.akeo.ie/ to format the drive to its full capacity. There are links on the page to other usb utils.

Tip

Safely remove and reinstall the U3 software!

First of all, sorry for my worse english :P Reinstalling U3 on your drive is sometimes not possible. To solve this you must remove it using the OFFICIAL U3 remover from SanDisk. If you delete U3 using the launchpad itself, or using the U3 removal utility from U3, you can't reinstall it. I've archived older versions of this utility's, because they're the most stable versions. U3 removal tool: http://tinyurl.com/ysu7bt U3 installer: http://tinyurl.com/23e7rl Just use this utility's. Note if you have deleted NOT using this utility's, it's possible it won't succeed. Hope this works for you! I've tested this using two SanDisk Cruzer's. Kind Regards, Stijn.

Not working

As of October 1st 2009, SanDisk started shipping the Cruzer Micro (SDCZ6-XXX) product line without the U3 software pre-installed on the device.

During the transition period, there may have been a small number of devices that were packaged in older packaging that states the device includes the U3 software. If you purchased one of these devices and would like to use the U3 software, please download and install it.

The computer don't read it. say that he need the cd.

Here is a link to a SanDisk Support Page that may help you:

If you try the above fix and it does not work, remove the Cruzer Flash Drive and then restart your computer. Once the computer boots back up, plug the Cruzer Flash Drive back into the USB port on your compuer (You can try different USB ports on your PC). It should detect the device and work.

U3 system doesn't run

Sandisk offers a program that completely wipes the Cruzer (including the partitioning), turning the drive into a pure unit. This is a permanent solution, and one cannot restore U3 functionality once this has been done. I hate the U3 stuff, so this is something I do with every Cruzer right out of the box.

Doing a search on Google for 'u3 removal' yields a few links, but at this moment, I'm running into a lot of broken links, and the original page on Sandisk's site (where I got the utiliy in the first place) is broken. I use the utility far too much to not be sure of having access to it, so I made sure to have it in my numerous 'essentials collection' CDs at home and work, as well as on my personal page in case I ever was somewhere without the CD.

One note about the version I have.... it is the Windows program, so if you have a Mac, you'll have to go to Sandisk and get the Mac version. I have no idea whether there is an option in Linux, but I'd be surprised if someone hasn't done it. Again, the Google results I got seem to have a lot of potential

Another thing, I have used this program flawlessly on a pile of 1GB and 2GB Cruzers. As far as I know, it will work on other sizes, but just so you're aware, I can't be 100% sure of that.

If you want to grab the Windows executable from my collection, go here: http://www.rawbw.com/~zio/misc/u3/U3Uninstall.zip

Hope this helps!

I'm guessing you are using a Mac, so you will need a friend's computer with Windows XP or later. Go here for the U3 Launchpad Removal Tool, or Google 'sandisk u3 removal'. The CD image is a hidden partition used by the U3 LaunchPad.

Cruzer Scandisk 2.0 titanium

Hi, Not unless you are using Windows98, your PC should automatically recognize the SanDisk Cruzer Titanium as a "Removable Storage/Device". Driver is not required for Windows ME, W2k or XP. If for some reason the SanDisk Cruzer Titanium (non-U3 devices) is not recognizable, then perhaps it is not a problem with the PC but with the SanDisk. Pls try all other USB ports of your PC (front and back). The SanDisk website provides utilities/software for this kind of eventuality. They are Sansa Firmware Updater and Sansa Connect Recovery Tool. Both are available at http://www.sandisk.com/Retail/DriverDownloads.aspx. Pls be forwarned that some utilities can and will reset your SanDisk to default and any or all data can and may be deleted. Hope this be of some help/idea. Pls post back how things are or should you need additional information. Good luck and kind regards.
