Heat pump fan does not run when house heat is on

Weekend cabin - recently had an ice storm. I noticed that the heat pump fan is not running when the house heat and blower is. Fear I am running on straight electric heat (expensive). is the heat pump suppose to run the fan when heating? Outside temp was 35 f with inside at 68 f.

The outside fan should be running except when the Heatpump goes in to defrost mode. Then the fan stops with the compressor running and it switches the reversing valve to heat up the outdoor coil. That should last about 5 min and you may see steam come off of the outdoor coil. That's normal.
Is the compressor running? It's possible that it's stuck in defrost or the fan simply died. I hope this helps.

My ac fan runs when I am in heating mode. should this happen

Yes. It is operating as a heat pump in this mode. If you notice that during the summer, when you feel the air coming off the outdoor unit, it is hot. This is the heat from the house being removed from the refrigerant that has just returned from the coil inside the house. When you switch to heating mode, you are effectively attempting to "air condition the world", so to speak. The process is reversed, with the outside coil grabbing whatever heat it can from the environment and sending it to the inside coil to be blown into the house as heat. Not as efficient as oil or gas maybe, but in moderate climes it can be cheaper overall.

Hear pump keeps running constantly, why won't it shut off?

if some units detect ice they will leave the fan running in an attempt to defrost the coils. If it's the outside coils and it's warm enough inside, try running the air conditioning for a few minutes, that will put hot coolant through the coils and could melt the ice for you.

BUZZING NOISE FROM MY HEAT PUMP

Take a look at this YouTube page that explains with good videos what are some of the common problems with heat pump noise. The one that seems dominant is the defrost cycle a heat pump goes thru when it melts ice off the evaporative coils. In defrost cycle, The compressor runs but the cooling fan does not, so you will hear a loud buzzing sound and the unit sounds like it is stalled...because only the compressor is running to generate heat to melt coil ice.

Should the condensor fan come on in heat mode?

It depends on the type of heat. If your air conditioner is a heat pump where it runs in reverse (takes heat from the outside air and pumps it into the house), the condenser fan will run. If heat is auxiliary electric coils, only the inside fan should run.

No heat but fan keeps running

If the air conditioner compressor runs all the time the main control board might be defective. The main control board provides the voltage to the fan motor and compressor. These boards are often misdiagnosed. Check all other components to be certain this is the cause of the problem.

I have a Mitsubishi heat pump that runs well but the outdoor unit does not defrost what could be the problem.

Why does my heat pump ice up in Winter?
Heat pumps naturally ice-up in the winter. It is normal for the entire coil to be covered in a white frost and even light ice, during cold weather conditions. However, it is bad for the entire unit to be encased in ice. This indicates ductless heat pump problems which should be addressed quickly to save energy and avoid serious damage to your ductless unit. These systems should periodically go into a defrost cycle. This keeps the unit running efficiently. If the coils are blocked by ice, proper heat transfer between the coil and the outside air will not occur.
How does the defrost mode work?
When the mini split heat pump goes into defrost, the reversing valve inside of the outdoor unit is energized, switching the system from heat to the air conditioning mode. The outdoor coil becomes the hot, the indoor coil becomes cold, and both - the outdoor and indoor fans shut off. This allows the outdoor coil to melt accumulated ice. When the built-in micro-computer analyzes that all ice have been melted, the heat pump heating system goes back to heating mode.
sanyo-mini-split-defrost.pngA cloud of water vapor may be seen rising over the outdoor unit and a "whoosh" sound can be heard as the refrigerant reverses direction. The entire process usually takes up to 10 minutes (depending on conditions).
How often does the system goes into defrost mode?
Ductless mini-split heat pumps have different ways of determining when to go into defrost. The built-in microcomputer determines outdoor temperature, refrigerant pressures, and several other factors. In colder temperatures the system will go into defrost more often than in warmer.
If a ductless mini split heat pump is severely iced-up in the winter it is possible that it isn't defrosting (though there could be many other causes). Let the manufacturer certified technician check your system

i hope the air condition is feet to your home ,if u have ceiling tall
the heat will stay high point ,and the air condtion will be on most of the time. if not
and the mode is heat
firrst:

clean the filter in evaporator (out side the house).
check and see if the engine of the evporator work and runing.
without wibrtion.
but the main reason is most unit hvac are not inverter,
so that mean if the tempratore out side is beneed to 5 degree Celsius (most of the time night) the unit will be frozen.
60 degrees f = 14 degrees c
you can defrost the buy chnge to mode cool.
other cohice ic to check the dieicer if u have it.

Carrier 38CKC042300. oUTSIDE UNIT FAN WAS TURNING REAL SLOW. ac UNIT IS OFF BUT FAN TO OUTSIDE UNIT IS STILL TURNING. sHOULD NOT BE TURNING AT ALL WITH AC UNIT OFF

The outside fan may run if the unit is in defrost mode this is normal for most heat pumps it is there way of trying to keep the outside unit from staying iced over so the next time the unit runs it will have air flow through the coil and the ice will not be there to prevent air flow.
