I have the same problem. The controller LED's continuously flash red and do not connect. when I plug the controller in, it works fine. The lights flash slowly compared to when it is connecting.

Once the controller is plugged in and connected to the console, hold down the PS button to select "turn off the system." Once the system has completed shutting down, unplug the controller and press the PS button. The console should turn on. If so, the controller will connect wirelessly. Unfortunately you'll have to do this with each controller but it works every time.

When I try this, the console will turn on, but then I get the 4 blinking lights again once started up. Any other ideas?

Hi have the same problem where the controller has to be plugged in to work....but have managed to solve it by complete luck! when it is plugged in and connected hold the ps button down and take out the usb, keep the ps button held until the 1 red light stays on which means it is connected. although once you turn the ps3 off you will still have to turn it on by the power button on the ps3 and then repeat the process. hope this works for you guys!

First, try hitting the reset button on the back on your controller - it's located just to the right of the screw located just above the label describing the FCC information about the controller. The button can be pushed with a paperclip, toothpick, or pen. If this is unsuccessful, then try plugging your controller into a USB port on your home computer or laptop. Other than that, I would recommend trying to return your controller, it may have been constructed wrong and the warranty should cover it. Good luck!

Same thing here. I DONT KNOW IFTHIS WILL WORK FOR YOU, BUT I...cleaned both ends of the usb cable with a Q-tip and a tiny bit of alcohol. Then i swabbed the female port of the controller. I NEVER TOUCHED THE PS3. i was asfraid of doing damage. Went back online for solution tips, 10 minutes later i realized my controller lights were blinking and charging again. Hope it works for you.

My ps3 controller wont charge

Bosa, you're wrong. Had the same problem. The USB cable that comes with the PS3 won't charge the new Dualshock Sixaxis. I had to use a thicker, more robust cable in order to get the controller to start charging.

Dualshochock 3 controller

On the back of the controller there is a very tiny rest button.
Press and hold for 5 seconds.
Then reconnect to PS3. It should work.
This fix came from Sony Tech Support.
