I'm looking for a new player, but suffering terrible confusion. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions, to help here's what my ideal player would have:
Media compatibility: CD-R/RW, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW Format compatibility: VCD, SVCD, DVD video
AVI playback: Low bitrate (700 kbit/s) DivX 3 with MP3 audio High bitrate ( stream to digital out Support for AVI subtitles (in .srt format?)
Connections: RGB SCART for now Component with NTSC & PAL progressive scan for later when I upgrade my TV
I was all but set on the Pioneer DV-575 until I found out it couldn't do subtitles with AVI files. The KiSS DP-1000 might have better compatibility, but personally I think it looks ugly (very subjective, I'll admit!). Don't fancy any of the cheap eastern imports, you know, Yamada, AMW, etc., again maybe that's just my personal preference.
Interesting, I'd actually considered the Xbox route, would be nice to run MAME on it occasionally. I'd never before heard that fan noise was a problem.
Don't think it'll do PAL progressive scan though?

Philips DVP642 - #
If you buy one, make sure you have the latest firmware (v.0531) available from the above site. Earlier versions don't support subtitles.

That would be the Philips DVP720SA then in the UK - supports both PAL and NTSC prog scan. ??120 from amazon.co.uk.
Just had a look at Philips website and they say it supports .smi, .sub, .srt, .ssa, .txt subtitles.
They also say XviD files will work in principle but cannot be guaranteed because it's open source. Can't see anything about outputting AC-3 in AVI files as a digital stream. Can anyone expand on these two points?

I can speak for the Yamada DVX 6600, it looks good, has played all the files I've tried on it, although the quality of the remote isn't great. It's got it's own support community and is well supported by the company (firmware upgrades).
check out #, has a review and forums I got mine from here, I think they're the cheapest: # ebuyer.co.uk feedback often has useful advice on it.

Hi There, I bought it from a friend of mine, that now is come back to italy, he said that it's perfect and it can play any dvd divx etc etc... I don't know why but at his home it was working, we tried it togheter, but with me it doesn't work (probably because I'm a girl :-)) joking). As first I've connected the scart to the divx and the TV, well, the Tv showed the yamada divx on the video... I tried to insert the first divx and after a while "loading" it says "no disc"... I changed thinking that it could be a used divx so may be not perfect... and also the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, divx disc wasn't recognized by the player... that's strange! At the end it tried with a DVD bought the day before (so original and new) but as always after a while "loading" it says "no disk"... that's impossible! How can it happen? So I tried changing the setup menu... with a lot of combinations... but it doesn't work as well... Can anyone help me? I don't know if I need other cables or not... I've connected the scart (TV to YAMADA) and after the player to the plug in the wall... is there anything else to connect? My TV is a big old-fashion mitsubishi in color (so no plasma or other new) Pleeeaseeee... I'm desperate... Thanks Apologies for my bad english... I'm an italian in london so sometimes I make a lot of mistakes Cheers Caterina
