Hi there
I think you can put up to 200BG IDE hard drive in that desktop, i recommend seagate hard drives as they come with a 5 year guarantee and can run at 7500rpm.

Good luck and thanks for using Fixya!!!

Needs to be larger

What needs to be larger ?????
If you need a larger hard drive other hardware might need to be upgraded to cope with the bigger hard drive although newer computers should be able to cope with a bigger hard drive.
WARNING: Before you start troubleshooting remember that you are dealing with electricity that can KILL.

Hello
This is a hard drive failure.Try holding down the f8 key while booting up and choose command promt.
Once there use Chkdsk .

Here is a link that explains how. This will check the drive and possibly repair it.If not you will need a new hard drive

I bought this machine refurbished from amazon.com and it came with a 40GB hard drive. When i try to put a larger one it and install windows it recognizes the hard drive but after copying files is done, it...

This machine can't use a hard drive larger than what it came with.
This is a very old machine and won't be able to run anything more than Windows 2000.
About the only thing that is current and will run worth a darned is Linux. With Linux you'll be able to use the larger hard drives as well.

You can replace the hard drive with a larger capacity hard drive. Best bet would be a 250GB .
Hard drive have come down in prices, you should be able to get a 250 GB. for less then $100.
Western Digital ansd Seagate are my preference.

If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.
Thanks, Joe

Hard Drive

You can replace it with a larger one, just make sure you buy the proper hard drive. If its and IDE hard drive, buy and IDE hard drive, if its an SATA Hard drive, buy an SATA Hard drive. also make sure after you install the new hard drive that you use the operating system cd to format the drive and to install the operating system.

CD/DVD Burners for Gateway 835GM PC

Your system has 4 SATA controllers which I mentioned on your previous question. Yes, they will work.

SATA drives are faster than the IDE interface drives.

Here is your motherboard:

The SATA connectors are those 4 approx. 1" vertical black connectors about a 3rd of the way down. The IDE connector is the horizontal one right on top of them.

As long as the SATA controller is set to Automatic in the BIOS, you should not have any problems. Also, the new drive should come with a SATA cable.

New hard drive choices

Hello, Bob!

Seeing as I am a 6 year veteran of Dell Tech Support, I should be able to help you out, no problem.

One thing that I would like to let you know is this: according to Dell Support Policy, you ARE allowed to put a non-Dell-branded hard drive in your computer. However, if Dell Support deams that this non-Dell hdd has caused another Dell component to fail, they will not replace the defective product. BUT, since it is HIGHLY unlikely that a non-Dell hdd would actually cause any other failure, feel free to purchase a non-Dell hdd. (I often times suggested that customers take this route because unless you're purchasing a refurbished Dell product, you're only paying for the Dell name.)

Anywho...

There really are no limitations to what size hdd you can install in your computer. Of course, a larger hdd will take more time to process information (Basically, there's more surface area to scan when your computer is searching for a specific piece of information.). Your main thing will be determining if you have an IDE hdd or a SATA hdd.

The Dell Tech website CAN be your friend (support.dell.com). From there, you can view original configuration and even available upgrades simply by entering your service tag (Usually found toward the back of your computer, on a black sticker with white text. It should list your service tag, an alpha-numeric value, and express service code, an all-numeric value).

If I were in your position, I would most likely not go over a 160g or 200g hard drive... simply to keep decent performance.

Hope I helped!

Labtop computer internal hard drive

The drive you have is a IDE, Ultra DMA 133, 4200 RPM.

If you are running XP or Vista you can purchase any brand hard drive. Size depends on what you want to spend. Recommend Maxtor. Just make sure it is IDE and for a laptop. Most computer retailers will sell them (BestBuy, Circuit City, etc)
