Hi there
I think you can put up to 200BG IDE hard drive in that desktop, i recommend seagate hard drives as they come with a 5 year guarantee and can run at 7500rpm.

Good luck and thanks for using Fixya!!!

Your Fujitsu MHV2040AH is an IDE 2.5" 5400 rpm 40 GB hard drive.

Most Notebooks nowadays will use 2.5" SATA hard drive which is not compatible with IDE.
New IDE are getting harder to find and are therefore in general more expensive to buy than the equivalent SATA

You should be able to update the drive with most 2.5" HDD with either 5400rpm or 7200rpm (faster) with an IDE interface. Common 2.5 IDE capacity would be 120Gb and 250Gb (320GB and 500GB are also available but could be a bit expensive). The important factors are physical size to fit in your notebook/casing and IDE interface. The BIOS support for larger drive can also be a factor but as a rule, worst case situation, a larger capacity drive can always be used at a lower capacity

Hope it helps.

Your 40GB drive is an IDE ("Integrated Drive Electronics") drive.
The largest IDE drive ever manufactured is 500GB.
However, some motherboards do not support drives larger than 320GB.

Some disk-drives (Seagate/Maxtor) come with a CD-ROM of "tools" that enable you to copy "everything" from your "old" drive to your "new" drive.

Jumper setting for WD400

It's not clear the model you are asking for, so I have to give you the total WD jumper settings and choose the case that you want.

Switching from 40GB IDE HDD to 500GB SATA HDD. SATA won't boot.

Hi there
No there is no need to change any jumpers on a sata drive, go into the bios settings and tell the bios to boot from the western digital drive only.

Good luck and thanks for using Fixya!!!!

Drive appears to have fouled computer

"Is there some obscure thing that a malfunctioning drive can do to a computer to render it useless?" Yes it can, however if you take out the HD and put in 1 you KNOW that worked fine and pc is still "useless" then i have no clue. Probably one of those things i just came across (especially with certain types of certain HD's): 1 out of every so many get out of the box broken. Useless. If you broke any seal your warranty is probably gone too, however try to claim your warranty annyhow and in any way, should this be the case (test with a healthy drive). Wine a lot and they might understand you case and send you a new one annyways, free with maybe only shipping cost (say you want to cover those if they don't want to do it initially). If you had the HD longer (not a fresh installation) it's probably fataly damaged, you can try repairing but it probably won't do any good.

Matsonic MS 8188E Bios upgrade

have you ensured that the jumpers on the back of the new hard disk are set correctly? if you want your 40gb HDD to be a master you must set it to master and your 20gb as a slave if you want them both on the same IDE cable look at pic below the image is only a guide as I do not know what HDD you have.
