Dishwasher isn't turning on

Kenmore Elite Dishwasher model#: 665.16592201 serial #: FP1003581

Dishwasher doesn’t operate. Light on front is lit with “- -“ If you push the cancel button on the front, it acts as a toggle switch either showing the “- -“ indication or turning it so no lights are on. On the top indicators either the “smart wash” led flashes or both the “quick wash” and “smart wash” leds falsh. If I move the latch up to open the dishwasher door there is no change in the display but as I release down the second dash in the display turns momentarily to a 2 so it looks like “- 2”

Thank you for your help!

Kenmore Elite Dishwasher model#: 665.16592201 serial #: FP1003581Dishwasher was operating fine until a sudden change in the electronic control function. It is plugged in with no external fuse issue, and doesn?t operate because the buttons are inoperable. Push and select as you might, the light indicators on the front is lit with ?- -? If you push the cancel button on the front, it acts as a toggle switch either showing the ?- -? indication or turning it so no lights are on. On the top of the door indicators show either the ?smart wash? led flashing or both the ?quick wash? and ?smart wash? leds flashing. If I move the latch up to open the dishwasher door there is no change in the display but as I release down the second dash in the display turns momentarily to a 2 so it looks like ?- 2?I don't want to buy parts until I'm advised and can narrow the parts down but I have to think it is either the a) electronic control assembly b) the panel control or c) something to do with the handle. My guess is it is probably not the latter because the handle switch sounds fine and feels like a switch clicking when lifted and released slowly but, who knows for sure. Thank you for your help!George

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

A couple of ideas yo may want to consider:

  • Initially, I have to agree on your 1st and 2nd suspects. However basing on your subsequent post that the display did change (even momentarily) to -2 in reaction to an action you took, leads me to think that the logic controller board is still doing its job, sensing conditions and displaying error message except that one of its input is causing erroneous conditions.
  • Offhand, I am more inclined to suspect that at least one of your buttons/keypad is stuck on a pressed position in the control panel.
Incidentally, the door switch could be tested with a continuity tester.

Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

These are a few check marks you can use. the code represents electric motor failure but, i would run the check marks to be sure.

Is the door closed tightly and latched?

Is there power to the dishwasher? Has a household fuse
blown or circuit breaker tripped?
Has the motor stopped due to an overload? The motor
automatically resets itself within a few minutes.
Is the water shutoff valve (if installed) turned on?
It is normal for certain cycles to repeatedly pause for several
seconds during the main wash.

Sir,
The "F2 - E0" error code means "Shorted keypad".

Remove power from the range, open the control panel and unplug the membrane switch ribbon from the control board.

Reconnect power to the range and observe for an hour.

If the error code reappear - replace the control board.

If not - replace the membrane switch.

If you have warranty with your model better contact manufactrer's for claim...

thanks good luck

The cancel light is on because the cycle maybe paused or canceled. The lit red button should say Cancel/Drain. If you already tried to press start and if it won't finish the cycle then try pressing the Cancel/Drain to drain and start over.

That signals an issue with a faulty heater &/or heater drive circuit.
(that info comes from their troubleshooting guide)
I ran into it this weekend and discovered that the heater coil in the bottom of the washer was broken.

Kenmore Elite Dishwasher Problem

I had this same problem so I took the front panel off to access the thermal fuse.  What I found instead was that food had become lodged in the door latch which was keeping the door safety switch from operating properly.  I took a thin screwdriver and removed the food from the cavity.  Since you did not have the problem in your first five years the cavity just might be the problem since that is about the amount of time it took me to get too much food stuck in mine as well. This solution took five seconds and requires no disassembly.
